Like many former soldiers, lance corporal Adolf Hitler was disillusioned with the new German Republic after the Armistice in 1918. Like man of his country men he was also in dire need of a job. The Bavarian Army provided an opportunity and soon young Adolf Hitler found himself in the ranks of an obscure political party in Munich: The German Workers' Party.

*Ads like this allow us to produce The Great War and keep it free for everyone. We basically expect that this episode will be demonetized. Nonetheless, we thoughts this was an especially important topic to cover and we decided to produce this episode besides the risk. Having a sponsor mitigates that risk somewhat.

This episode is going to get demonetized since Youtube hates people learning about history.

Unintentional side-lesson to this video: Don't worry if you're in your 30s and feel that you've missed your chance - it's coming :P

Now I realize why he became so popular. Every single German at the moment had either fought in the trenches or lost some relative in them, so it's not hard to guess how he managed to be taken seriously in such a visceral way. Because not only did he talk the talk; he had already established that he was a man that had walked the walk (or run the run in his case).

We're all used to "local austrian madman rises to power, destroys half the world". But these early beginnings, these first steps, are quite fascinating.

This is a really informative and accurate video. Been watching this channel since 2014; when WW1 ended (again) the future seemed uncertain without Indy's presence in the channel; but now I see that my faith in the continuing project onto WW2 wasn't misplaced.

I applaud you all for your excellent work! More to come!

It's difficult to imagine the life of an average person in Germany in the turbulent and chaotic aftermath of the Great War. An almost absolute lack of stability and security. Great insight here into how and why Germany started down it's path.

Jess, you are an artist. You are the first to actually pronounce words, names in all languages of the countries you mentioned in your video. Superb!

I think this is the best historical accounting of this period that I have seen. It reveals issues that played a critical role in Hitler's rise, issues that for some reason, many other documentaries fail to include or discuss. Excellent.

I like how you focused on the fact that he was uneducated and had no skills and thus no life prospects. For a lot of such people a war gives them purpose and advancement, and losing that also becomes difficult since in a normal society the skills they learn in wartime and gave them value in that context is gone. No wonder so many of them sought to recapture that.

I can't believe YouTube let you say the name of a certain German political figure.
