ABOUT ME: I'm James Dunne, a runner, sports rehabilitation therapist (similar to physical therapist) and coach based in the UK (Norwich and London).

Since 2007 I've been working with athletes focusing specifically on helping distance runners and triathletes overcome injury and improve performance through developing their individual running technique.

Running biomechanics and physical therapy are real passions of mine. I love to help runners run strong and stay injury free.

It works for him.
In HS, I was a very pronounced heel striker, never had been told by coaches that it was detrimental to success. This was in the mid 1970's. No internet. No video analysis. No nutritional advice. No synthetic tracks. No super shoes. PR of 4:28 in the mile.
Even in college, though I got faster, my form was still terrible.
Managed to peak at 3:59 for 1500M.
Now, at 64, I watch a ton of running videos, and my form has improved significantly, and I am competitive within my age group, and still enjoy running, the process.
Hoping to crack the six minute mile barrier this summer.
Cheers!

After watching many YouTube videos on running form (forefoot striking) and zero drop or barefoot running I tried to convert from a heel-striker to midfoot or forefoot striking. Two years of calf and shin injuries later I have reverted to heel striking and feel more comfortable and stronger.

Camille Herron's running form is absolutely bizarre to look at but it clearly works for her for running hard for 100+ miles.

Finally a video about Kitata😂
He is the fastest heel striker indeed. Brigid Kosgei heel striked her way to 2:14:04 when she broke the WR. Insane

Unpopular opinion: I don't think heel striking is that bad as long as your heel is landing under your knee or torso.

The ultimate "can't argue against result" moment.

The body's motor programs is complex. The risk is when you focus on form that you disrupt the motor program and will end up with poorer running economy. The best way to improve your running technique is to run long sessions as well as fast sessions. Do not think about form, and let the body automatically adapt the motor programs via these workouts to run more efficient.

so glad to see you mention Jeptoo in this video, she was another example who came to mind when I saw the title. Such a great runner who has truly made her form work for her!

Peres Jepchirchir, who's winning every marathon lately, also has a style that look like she is already very tired, it doesn't look effortless at all. But it works for her.

we will probably find out in the years to come that there has been too much anti-heel strike mentality going on for too long .. .it is like how we are told to never bend our backs when lifting and to avoid going knees past toes on squats... some of these orthodoxies are just plain dogma

Bad technique is always negative since it is a way to waste energy.
Theoretically these runners would be even faster with a more optimal and more efficient technique.

This is a great video. I tried to take all the tips that I learn from different people and incorporate them when I go out to run. It's a lot to think about! LOL

I think some folks confuse heel strike(very hard to pull off as your knee is locked in impact) with dorsiflexion(foot cocked back for drive strike.) That extra dorsiflexion that is released under the hips is a bit like topspin finish for some extra power and elasticity.) I call it heel guiding- as the heel touches the dorsiflexion transfers to plantar flexion for ankle whip. By the time the full power transfer happens he not over striding but beneath his hips.

I seen studies somewhere that heel strikers do not see an increase injuries when compared to forestrikers.

It’s not bizarre running technique - it’s his running form and there’s no one set form.
