My dumbass never thought of elevating just the heel. I elevated my entire foot and felt it even more on my glutes

would it feel better and give a beneficial stretch if your bench foot was flat on the top of the foot instead of the tips of the toes? I imagine it would stretch the shins really nice

Good advice but doing back leg on a high object like a bench is not as effective as doing it lower to the ground. The higher up that back leg is, the more weight that shifts to that leg versus the leg you’re trying to work. If you keep your opposing leg lower it forces you to balance and shift more weight to the leg you’re working!
