Thanks! this was helpful.

It's crazy how we've been struggling with getting 5.1 speakers to work properly since at least 2002 (that I dealt with). Pretty much the same sound card makers and speaker brands, AI taking over the world, game graphics looking insane, but 5.1 setup on a PC still requires 100 different trials to get to work once, and then it breaks the very next software upgrade.

Scenario is my PC with Creative AE5 plus sound card. Speaker setup is Sony HT RT3. AE5 plus isn't even responding to its native software 'Sound Blaster Command'. Movies that I watch are all encoded AAC5.1 channel. Surround speakers are either just imitating the front ones or they are shut completely.

QUESTION: I have an HP Laptop. This laptop only has 2.0 sound with a Left and Right speaker built into the laptop. Most movies sound noticeably better when switching to the 2.0 sound format in a movie rather than the 5.1 sound format. But, if you leave it in 5.1 mode it still is acceptable. But, there is one movie where the only format available is 5.0 sound format. In this movie called Girl With The Dragon Tattoo on Blu-ray, you can hear the sounds from the Left and Right speaker in the laptop; however, you never hear the voices - presumably because the voices are only in the Center Channel. I used the HDMI channel to watch the video on TV, and when watching on TV with my 5.1 A/V Receiver there are voices that can successfully be heard in the Center Channel. As an experiment, I used Handbrake to change this 5.0 sound format to 2.0 Dolby Surround sound. Using that sound format, the laptop did in fact play the voices. I should also mention that in addition to the 5.0 Blu-ray, I own the DVD of that same movie - which actually has 5.1 sound. The DVD works fine on the laptop, just all other movies do. Do you know why the voices cannot be heard from the laptop in that one movie?

Thank you for your help. One last step I had to do to get my system working; I have a 5.1 surround system but my rear speakers still wouldn't work when I selected 5.1 in the config panel. I had to choose the 7.1 setup and then remove the side speakers, now it works fine, thank you again.

i'm not sure why there's so many negative comments, this was the only thing that worked to fix my computer. i have no clue why it decided to do that in the first place so your help is very appreciated!

no dice. I've tried both the spdif and hdmi output using passthrough on my tv and neither is able to output surround. It just mixes down to stereo

did both steps, still does not work for me. when i go into speaker test, sounds comes from all of them. But when i check the layout (where you would config the setup and do the sound test). the side pair are greyed out in the optional speakers section. So...only the front L/R and center+sub work when actually using an application. 3.1

Hi! I did how you explained in the video but it didn't work =/.
I have those speakers, and my sub-woofer doesn't work... All the cables are connected correctly, all the drivers are updated. The sound is loud and clear from the satellites speakers, but nothing comes out from the sub-woofer =( I can feel it shake just a little bit only. When I open the sound mixer, if I turn off the left and right satellite speakers, there is no sound at all. If I go to settings and test the sounds 2.1 (or even 5.1), when it tests the subwoofer, no sound comes out of it. Do you know what I can do to fix it please? My system is Windows 10.

When I click the "test" button on the sound control panel, it works fine, but media from spotify, youtube, and windows itself dont work though all my speakers

Nope, didn't fix anything, but you still get a thumbs-up for that second device manager suggestion. What worked for me is below.

Another thing I was not aware of, is that Windows 10 actually have a Mono audio setting (under Ease of Access, or Accessibility, depending on Windows version). But that wasn't it either.

My "problem" was that I had installed Equalizer APO (and the Peace Equalizer interface for it). Well, it worked great before it suddenly decided not to. I just used it for an improved fake surround and bass management for music, since Windows built-in is poor at best.

Anyway, uninstalling those solved it. For now.

jesus, it is individual fix. Because it works for you when your system supports this format, this doesnt mean it will work for others! You have to know what your system can handle, not just change it to 96000 khz! ... For everybody: Check what your audio system can handle and then you can change it to that value. Dont change it immediately to 96000 khz otherwise your system might just not work. Also beware that some older system might also not support 24 bit formats.

Hi, just bought one used without the aux cable. I used it via optic cord connected to the tv and my tv to the laptop via hdmi. I would like to connect the speakers directly to my laptop but when I tried with a single aux cable it didn't work. Can you please tell me, do I need a 3x minijack(similar to the original) to connect it to my laptop and if so it's ok if I only plug in one jack in it to get 5.1 surround sound?! Thanks

I have a question not related to your video, but related to Dolby. On my Samsung TV, most videos don't play with Dolby sound. Just stereo. But your video is recognized as a Dolby sound video by my receiver. What is it you do that even original Dolby videos can't? Is this because my receiver doesnt support Atmos and yours is just plain Dolby Digital?

Seriously... that was all? I checked more than a dozen articles and forum threads for like 90min and the solution was this simple? I hate everybody, except for the maker of this video, thanks!

your title is "Fix 5.1 Channel Surround Sound not working in Windows 10" and u solving Realtek headphone sound.

you do know that the settings you changed were for an output of only 2 channels! this has nothing to do with 5.1 channel surround sound! you just changed the sample rate of those two channels! dislike for misleading title and what ever else...

When I am in the sound control panel, and I click on my sound device, which is a realtek audio device, the configure button is greyed out. It never used to be. Do you have any idea why?
