In Today's video I revisit a colony that we treated for the Varroa Mite last week using the Mite Away Quick Strips (MAQS). It's time to prepare colonies for Winter and so we also remove the empty supers that have now been cleaned by the bees and can be stored as dry supers.

I treated one of my hives with Mite Away Quick Strips this past September (2018). After I put the strips in the hive, most or all of the bees started bearding the hive box. They went back in the hive about a day and a half later. Also immediately after putting in the strips, the bees started buzzing loudly. I have read that this type of loud buzzing is a characteristic of a queenless hive. The bees stopped buzzing 8 days later!! I'm not sure if they made an emergency queen or the queen survived the treatment.
It is now three and a half months later, and the hive appears to be doing well, depite the fact that Winter arrived very early (late October instead of late November). However, the bees are going through a lot of fondant.

Never had a problem with MAQS, but I use Poly hives which have a mesh floor. Using MAQS with a solid floor can result in too high a formic acid fume concentration.

I treated my hive with MAQS. During the treatment i noticed a lot of dead bees in front of the hive. After i removed the strips there was a significant reduction in capped brood. is this normal?

Can you let me have a link to the first video you did when placing the MAQS strips in the hive?

Can I leave suppers on that I’m not harvesting when treating for varroa?

Very worrying to find the queen missing and this time of the year ? all though you had supersedure queen cells. Do you think that the Quick strips have set off the the Supersedure mode in the hive. The bees have to learn how to get rid themselves of varroa themselves eventually and the beekeeper killing the varroa for them is not sustainable for them on the long run. I found the Quick strips are to harsh a method for my likening and have cesed useing them. Would rather wait and Vapourise at December. I hope you succesfully get that extra queen, a bonus at this time of year I enjoy the videos john Owen

How do You know they are supersedure queen cells? Are they different to normal swarm queen cells?

How do you remove the bees that remain in the dry supers, before taking them away for winter storage?

Not for sure but I noticed at the 10:00 minute mark it looks like a swarm in the trees over your right shoulder. LOL

Can I ask when was this video recorded? I'm always curious as not sure if the publish date is near when you make them. Also thank you very much for your videos, they've really helped me through my first year of beekeeping

On several of your excellent videos, I see that many of the frames being inspected appear to have 'lost' some of the original wax foundation, especially at the lower corners. (I assume that each frame was originally fitted with a full panel of foundation.) What causes this attrition of the foundation? Does there come a time when the frame needs to be re-made with new foundation?
