Price can't really compare when 5090s are going for $4000+ right now. Also, don't generally have to worry about a fire with a MacBook. The 50 series launch has been one of the worst in a while.

You would not pair a 5090 with a 12900K, 9950X at least… 9800X3D or 9950X3D for gaming mixed usage.

All I saw was that M4 smashed in AE rendering at 1/6th the power consumption!!! AMAZING for motion artists! If 3D is your thing, then a 5090 workstation is your cup of tea.

Checking the Apple site.. the MacBook Pro with M4 Max chip is in stock with delivery tomorrow. I mean you can actually buy it ... today.
RTX 5090 FE (for all practical purposes) does not exist at retail. You cannot purchase one even if you wanted to.

Great video but I'm really confused about the way you chose to display comparison percentages. You are showing both positive and negative percentages on the same side which works in NVidias favor. For example, if M4 is twice as fast at something than RTX, you would display "RTX5090 -50%", but if RTX is twice as fast, you display "RTX5090 +100%". And it gets worse as you approach higher numbers because you only can move down to -100%, while you can move infinitely high on the + side. This is biased!

What's the logic behind bottlenecking the 5090, out of curiosity? Wouldn't it do better if you used a better cpu/ram?

4:05 The Metal/Vulcan comparison is the fairer comparison since Metal is what almost all modern apps use. OpenCL has been deprecated a long time ago, so using it in comparisons is not even fair.

For AI testing, you can try to run LLM and compare its average response time and/or token per second. Just run the same AI model and give it the same input.
Ollama or LM Studio can do the job well enough and those can run on Windows, Mac and Linux.

It would make more sense to compare mobile GPU to the Max or even an iGPU. Or compare the desktop GPU to an M4 Ultra in a Mac Studio.

I have to admit that I don’t understand why you’re pairing an almost four-year-old CPU (12900K) and outdated DDR4 memory with the best GPU (5090) currently on the market. The M4 Max is not just a fast GPU but also features the fastest CPU currently available. The CPU bottleneck in your test setup could be significant. 🙄

This is not a complaint but that's a desktop being compared to a laptop. A high-end Windows desktop using a mobile GPU would have made more sense. I know this is just a decent spec comparison but you're not going to be carrying that desktop around with you. Both computers have their place so there is no outright winner.

I was waiting 2.5 years for RTX5090, not its not in sale. Burning cables, Missing ROPs, Extreme prices 4200$ in Turkiye. ( already bought asus astral 5090 for 4400$ )

Counterpoint, you can't use the Apple M4 GPU for anything other than video encoding because Apple refuse to support Vulcan, Linux and Linux VMs with GPU sharing. Even if it had the same performance of the 5090 - it would be "big for nothing"

10:01 The GPU TOPs you stated for M4 Max is completely wrong! The 38 tops is for its neural engine (NPU). I thought you would know this?
