I would have looked at the clear glass cup and thought, "That glass cup is gonna get hot", not knowing it's fancy double glass, and grabbed the white coffee cup.

FINALLY someone who knows how to articulate what UX design is!!!! I wandered in the confusing forrest of UX/UI\Graphic for months until I finally started to understand. This was the last piece of the cake. Thank Thank you!! So well explained. Without the ya da ya da design talk language that most designers speak. LOVE this! Thanks a bunch.

This is actually a really great summary of what UX design really is. I love that you mention that it is not a linear process at all.

I can't agree with the glass cup having a better user experience. I always avoid them. You can't feel how much the coffee or tea has cooled down, from the outside. I burn my mouth a lot on these glasses. 🙃

Don Norman's 'The Design of Everyday Things' is a good start for anyone trying to understand the basic design flaws in almost anything and everything around us.

One thing I find interesting is the 'desirability' aspect and how that will change from person to person. Some will desire the glass coffee cup because its functional and 'sexy' in a modern way, but some people will find the white mug more desirable, even though it's less 'usable, ' because it's a classic design - it makes people feel a certain way. So yes, the glass cup is a better user experience, because it covers all three areas, but no matter how good the user experience is, human behavior will ultimately determine which experience they choose. Sometimes one of those 3 areas will trump the other 2 for a person. I don't know what my point is here, but it was an interesting thought :P

Your explanation was a 1000x better than my college professor's lesson. It was super simple, straight to the point and short i appreciate the help thanks a lot.

I'm glad that you didn't just speak about UX as web and app design. I see a lot of confusion on the web about this. A lot of people speaking about user experience but only referring to the website flow and appearance, when UX is way broader and part of every aspect of our life.

Man you nailed it again. I love the fact you turned questioners, interviews, user journeys, ect into Understanding. There was a lot that fell into place for me right there. Thanks

Thank you so much! I encountered UX design thinking 2 weeks ago at a conference and finding myself thirsting for more knowledge. Currently I'm a web designer and dev. But I see a potential future in UX. I'd love to learn how to get started in UX design, where to learn more, and other things like that.

Such a vast and complex subject to try and explain. Thank you for this! One thought I had was regarding glass cup having better UX. I personally prefer a more traditional design with handle (even if it's small). This speaks to your point about designing for a target audience, and the responsibility we have to try and remove personal bias.
