Good video and will be helpful to people just getting started. When I started using Plex was on a Windows PC, I% with 32GB of ram, but when I added the DVR and OTA recording to it, Windows couldn't handle it. So I went to a headless Linux server and have been running that way since, I have about 40TB of storage on it. I also like to play and I have it running on a truenas as well. I have a 24TB NAS I use for my home network shares it has the plexapp, but I have never play with it. I have read and seen great reviews on that Synology, and if I had one of those, I would test and running on that as well like I do my Truenas, but my Primary will be my headless server, it out of the way, I rarely ever have to touch it, unless I was adding a drive. Thanks for sharing.

I have no bottleneck or problem with 4K HDR 10-bit color files whatsoever from my Nvidia shield. It handles all of those very well and very smooth. This includes playback from apps like Plex, Emby, Nova Player, VLC and honestly my favorite and usually my go to for 4K playback on shield MX Player (with additional codec installed). Yes I know MX Player is quite old these days and the codec issue is a pain in the butt but old habits I guess. Nova player it is quickly becoming my new favorite simple go to Media player that just works smooth choice though.

As far as connecting external hard drives to your Nvidia Shield you need to pick the right hard drive. I'm also using one of those SSD drives as adopted storage for a nice large storage volume instead of the default laughable 16 GB storage it comes with. Keep it simple, I'm not using external hard drives that require additional power sources. They are powered through USB only. SanDisk portable extreme Pro is fantastic. Samsung has a real nice SSD drive for use on the shield as well. I would pretty much only recommend those two drives, I have a couple of SanDisk portable extremes and you can easily connect a few of these to a simple USB hub if you want more drives. Honestly using SMB network storage though I have access to every hard drive on my Windows PC internal as well as external plus additional storage space I can squirrel files away on tablet micro SD cards etc. One of the most important things is being careful to set up everything properly. When you get to the point where you have easy SMB network attached storage directly from your Shield so you can easily copy files over or move large files over to other drives to get them off of your Nvidia Shield setup, well then that makes using everything very easy and you have a lots and lots of choices with where you have your files stored and how. Personally I use FX file explorer using Windows SMB storage for most of my file transfers but Send files to TV app is also good for going directly between Android devices.

I've evolved to the point where I run my media server off of my Nvidia Shield now. This is actually quite nice because as a single user not letting a bunch of other people leech media from my Plex server, it is just for me to use, this works very well off my Nvidia shield with a few external hard drives connected for storage.

I've also started trying Emby. I've also discovered that I really really like Emby. Specifically it has faster playback response than Plex. It does outperform Plex in some key areas regarding playback speed, how fast it will find and play certain points in the video when rewinding or fast forwarding. Specifically it's really good at remaining stable while jumping around on the timeline which I do more than I should.

Both apps are very easy to get up and running on the Nvidia shield. Plexus build in by default so that's easy, . Emby is easy to sideload the package for the Nvidia Shield onto it. Occasionally if it needs an update that's super easy to download the updated package on my tablet, send the file to The Shield using SMB Network storage access, install it, delete the package, bang bang boom the server is updated.

As far as managing both of these servers that works very smoothly from my Android tablet. The Emby app specifically has a very fast couple of tabs access and your right into the settings from the app. Just tap the gear icon, and boom you have the server settings page. Makes it real fast and easy to update the server, adding New Media etc. Also I have found Emby excels at making editing metadata and images extremely easy and intuitive.

Slowly I think I'm becoming an Emby fan although I still love and use both apps, I have been using Emby more these days.

Don't be afraid to try both. They are both basically the same, small differences that you might like or not like depending on what you prefer. Both of these apps are well worth trying though. Don't just try one, try them both.

As for jelly fin I will try that as soon as they make an Android version available that can run on the Nvidia shield. If they never do that then I will never try it.

Being old school, I built a TrueNAS server using a Supermicro with a Xeon X11 processor with 5 10TB drives and four small digital drives for my boot drive (2) and a second (2) for the programs. The 5 10TB spinning rust drives are for data only. Since we moved to Idaho from Los Angeles, the cost of electricity is so much cheaper so running a full server is not going to break the bank.

A quick question, my nVidia Shields all have 1gig ethernet ports that work great but my Roku Ultras only have 10/100 ethernet ports. Why won't Roku upgrade those ports so the streaming over my gigabit network be better on the Roku boxes????

Given the price of electricity in the UK, running a server is no longer practical. My PLEX is now just for me not for my friends.

Emby is by far the best one and worth the lifetime premiere price. It has all the important features Plex does, it doesn't spy on you and it just works unlike Jellyfin (and their broken Android app).

Plus no NAS can stream at 4k unless it's over $1000 lmao
