I'm in a graduate program at the moment and I find the whole program is self-directed. I find that the "self-directed" part of the adult learning theory is used as an excuse for profs not to teach anything. It's very frustrating for the students in my program. As you mentioned in your video, instructors have to equip and provide guidance to the learner so they can learn efficiently on their own (which they don't). I also find the joy and passion for being an educator is lost when institutions adopt and misuse the "self-directed" theory. It's sad because there are educators with a passion for education that are not getting the opportunity to teach because it becomes easy money for profs not to teach because of "self-directed" learning.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell my students they need word x and y because it sounds distant from their reality, but then all of a sudden they start listening those words that were previously ignored. It’s hard to convince adults sometimes because they can be very skeptical and are commonly running against the clock….

Why is the music so loud? Its distracting. No need for music in an educational video 🤷‍♀️

These assumptions apply, with minor adjustments to children. Each one of these can be reworded to describe how children learn. Taking just one, when children are interested in something, They want to know more about it -- they are fully motivated.
There is a deeper problem with this view. It takes the teacher/learner relationship as the only valid one. Learning within a peer group setting with fluid mentoring positions is equally goal-effective, IMHO.
An even deeper question is, *Who decides what is to be learned?* and why?
