Five months ago we had a fire in our garage and lost all our belongings. We are still devastated, but we had an emergency fund. We never thought we'll need it... But life can be tough. I don't know what we would have done without that money. Now we can rebuild our life.
And PLEASE to everyone: keep all your important stuff in a fireproof safe. Must not be a huge one. It can really save you go through the pain of loosing everything. Put in documents, pictures, jewelry, sentimental stuff... Do it now. Just make a list what couldn't be replaced, order a safe, grab the items and put them inside. Like now.
