Mountain Lion Scream Decoded: You Won’t Believe This Sound!

Mountain lion scream decoded! The haunting vocalization of a mountain lion can sound eerily similar to a woman's scream, creating spine-chilling encounters in the wilderness.

These big cats produce an array of mountain lion sounds, from low-pitched hisses and growls to their signature high-pitched screech. Female mountain lions typically scream during mating season to attract males, while males respond with powerful roars.

Cubs communicate through soft chirps and mews, staying in contact with their mothers. Scientists believe these vocalizations help establish territory and maintain social bonds.

In the wilderness at night, nature's most chilling vocalization often comes from mountain lion screams, which can freeze the blood of even experienced hikers.

These apex predators use an intricate system of mountain lion sounds to mark territory and communicate across vast distances. From menacing growls to their infamous high-pitched screams, these cats command attention through their vocal abilities.

The range of mountain lion sounds includes soft prusten - a gentle puffing noise made during peaceful encounters - and sharp warning spits when threatened. Unlike their larger cousins, they can't produce true roars due to their unique throat anatomy. Instead, they share the domestic cat's ability to purr continuously. Cubs communicate through distinct meows and chirps, especially when seeking their mother's attention or signaling hunger.

I love this! Glad some are still around! They keep the deer herds from growing too large which usually results in contageous diseases which can decimate the herd. These cats are so strong they can "pull down" a large mule deer buck. If they have a "kill" and a big bear smells the deer's blood and comes and trys to challenge these lions...they will stand their ground and fight to keep their food!

Thanks for this educational video! I adore all cats and have never heard the sounds of a mountain lion before. I hope I never hear them close by while hiking😳

I hearw once what sounded like a baby crying where I used to live, went on and on, finally I went outside and therebin a tree was a squirrel crying loud, I said consoling quiet words and it stopped, later it came on my porch laying around, I never shoo off wildlife, unless it's a larger racoon or skunk.

Mountain lions make some crazy sounds, and so do foxes.

Here's a great quote about a mountain lion.
"After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him. The moral: When you're full of any kind of bull: keep your mouth shut."
Will Rogers said that about 100 years ago and it's good advice, don't you think?
This is a great video that's informative and entertaining too.

An injured large cat lion or tiger could be pairing making noise to attract a similar feline for help attention because they are injured just like little cats that are domesticated they meow knowing that the human would react

A Female Red Fox sounded exactly like a woman in great distress and prompted me to call 911.

Heard them several times, seen very fresh tracks (and know one was checking me out), but I've never seen the damn things....

Nice! Does anyone know if these animals are endangered? With human encroachment to their habitat, it would seem to have to be but, after watching the coyote video, me thinks maybe they're doing well themselves???

I've encountered Mtn lions/Cougars twice. First time was in early 2000's near Cougar, WA. A large cougar crossed the trail in front of me. He hid behind the only tree for a few hundred feet in all directions. It had branches to the ground, so I couldn't spot him once he got behind the tree. I had a machete with me, so I hit my hardhat with the machete. The cougar growled at me. I had to walk past the tree and go uphill back to my rig approximately 1/2 mile away. I never walked sideways so fast in my life. The second time was this summer in Colorado. The cougar crossed the trail I was on a few hundred feet away from me. I was resting on the trail, so I don't think it saw me. Still, I was on high alert for the rest of the hike. That growl still sends chills down my back.

Has anyone ever heard a mix between the more human like sounding screams like this and the Woops of a Gibbon monkey? Something that sounds way too advanced and emotional like a primate, but no primates are native to the area and everything acts afraid of it and gets dead quiet. No locals or mountain men I have played the video I recorded for knew or ever heard anything like it. Doesn't match anything I can find and the closest is a mix between a mountain lions banshee scream and a Gibbon monkey which obviously makes no sense ... I'm fixing to make a video on it and the area it's in because it's not even a bear and that's the only other worse threat there than a man, or ML, the first experience I had with it sounded evil, like a victory call and command because it hasn't even stopped before me and my fiance were surrounded by a pack of wolves and we just quickly made a fire and had our knifes and my pistol ready, luckily we were raised in the country and have a passion for animals and survival and whatnot so we were able to handle it because of the knowledgr we had and the awareness of our surroundings, as well as the warning hoots from an owl friend we had made a few nights before, it was bone chilling scary sounding and more disturbing than the wolves trying to get at us and if our luck too has gone differently, after they gave up, not too long before the sun was starting to come up and we knew we were safe and calmed down, we both agreef that we felt that the sound we heard, at least 200 yards away, seemed to be aware of the pack hunting, that it and whatever else was going to eat good that night. It seemed certain and then I heard it that next day around 10 am making woooAP WOOOAP sounds v similar to a Gibbon. I was certain that's what it was until I heard it there a third time sounding like it was looking to kill, not just hunt but to kill. It combined the two noises and was almost non stop, and it was within 50 yards of me and probably watching me sitting in my car cus I knew if I went there I was going to hear it. Well my intuition was right and I caught a recording and I need to figure out what this is because no one has any clue and is scared by it. My father in law has gone bear hunting and isn't scared because he also has unshakable faith in Jesus and God and has faced some pretty insane circumstances, and the damage all over the woods like how two bucks make when they fight, or how bears can, the scat we've found, hair, nothing is adding up to be anything anyone already knows about. If you're reading this please look up the Gibbon sounds and if you've heard anything like it please let me know!!! This thing is definitely a danger! And I cannot be the only one that's heard it but no one else does seem to be curious or investigating or aware even tho it's loud enough for anybody within a mile to hear. And I have proof of it so I'm not imagining things. I wish I was. Anybody else? 😅

When you hear a baby cry you better get a gun and several other ppl with guns if you go investigate. The baby crying is a big cat. Behind you. They can throw their voice so to speak. It's make you go toward the cry and attacks you from behind. I almost had that happen to me in south Texas. Luckily I had been told this before and also I had seen the cat just seconds before. It was to my right in high grass and the cry was to my left. So. Beware
