Pro tip: tie the knot off of center so it will still hold, but releasing the tension will allow it to pull out. Keeps the stick from getting stuck in the neck of the container when you're ready to remove it.

Don't want to stick a dirty finger in to get your twig loose.

To make the char easy to remove, rub your canteen (or any other pot) on the outside with a high fat soap like Ivory.

Fantastic idea. Makes it more practical to make really small quick fires instead of big ones!

It's gross and it's sketchy but you don't even need a metal container to do this. As long as a plastic vessel has water inside of it it will not burn. So you can even do this with a soda bottle. It'll taste bad but it's better than being dead

There is a very cheap device for suspending or lifting any size water bottle over a fire, and it can be stored inside the bottle..

That would be aerobic bacteria, which for the most part, are pretty much harmless. I imagine there is anaerobic bacteria in the cambium layer, the layer that you touch after you skin it. I would be more afraid of anaerobes than aerobes. But I would also be afraid of neither in this case. The lichen, fungi, and algae in the bark probably pose a much greater threat. Which really isn't that big unless you are putting it directly on your skin or sleeping on it.

Curious though on whether or not the flames would reach the paracord and burn/melt it?

Can the stick come from any type of tree ? Or are there some trees that are toxic ?

Carry a fish mouth spreader instead. Does the same job....

It must be a single walled bottle, is that correct?

Or just set it on a few rocks or logs. Good tip though.

A. You are boiling the water, the bark doesn’t matter if you are boiling correctly. To kill Giardia you want to boil the water for at least 10 minutes, sure some people will tell you 1 minute is enough, but those people have never had the beaver fever. You have that once, you don’t take chances.

2. The whole idea of not having to wait for coals, it’s just stupid. You’ve never had to wait for coals dumb dumb. You build your fire properly so you can rest the canteen on the sticks. No toggles or cordage necessary. Just a pliers to grab it when done boiling.
