I started making my best gains when I started writing down the reps, sets and weight.
If I hit 225 for 5, next time I'm aiming 225 for 6 for example, this made it more effective and more fun in my opinion

You sound exactly like my coach. Especially rule #1 and I can say the last two months of prep I’ve gotten the best results just following these rules and he adds in a 7th. Simplicity and tried and true beats over complicated modern workouts

6. Don't supinate radioulnar joint when doing dumbbell chest presses. Prevent injury.

7. Don't do upright rows in order to prevent over internally rotating shoulders. Prevent injury.

8. Realize that fueling your body with lots of protein will help with building muscle, but will also facilitate the growth of cancer cells.
