Harvard Scientists May Just Have Uncovered the Holy Grail of Battery Technology [May, 2021]

For almost five decades, Lithium Metal Batteries or Solid State Batteries have held the promise of capacities, lifetimes, and charging capabilities many times that of today's Lithium Ion batteries.

But dendrites and low current densities have held them back. A discovery at Harvard in May of 2021 might just change all that.

Reading the comments it's interesting how ignorant people are to the life altering changes that have occurred, and continue to occur, in their own lifetimes. I suppose it's like aging, you don't notice it until you stop and look back a significant portion of time. I'm 56. When I was a kid, in a small town of about 3500, if you wanted information you went to the library. Good luck getting information on thermodynamics, aquaponics, etc. Now, from nearly any spot on the planet I have access to almost all the knowledge of mankind. If you wanted to call someone you had to know where they were, and the number of that location. You called a place, not a person. Now you can call nearly anyone regardless where they are. Off grid meant an outhouse, oil lamps, and a root cellar full of canned goods. It's 5am and I'm sitting in my well lit 5th wheel (we're building our house) on 60 remote acres in the woods. I'm accessing the internet, enjoying air conditioning in a heat wave, have a fully stocked refrigerator and freezer etc. thanks to solar panels, charge controllers, inverters, and two big fork lift batteries. These technologies either didn't exist or were cost prohibitive just a short time ago. Nearly every aspect of our lives are vastly different and we don't notice because we don't realize these changes occur, for the most part, in incremental steps that are themselves small but collectively massive.

I love the second message she read "This battery seems to be able to do everything except leave the lab" LOL

At first I thought this was one of those "in the near future we will fix everything" upbeat hipster videos that don't make any sense when you look at the science. But then went into all the technical details and what the issue is... Very well done on explaining the different types of issues and explaining the safety gotchas.

I would be happy to listen to this woman read VCR setup instructions all day. <3

I've missed you, Sira! Your videos are just getting better, very interesting topic! I remember reading about dendrites back in 2018, when I was trying to understand why my phone battery died. Your explanation here is the best I've ever seen.

This is the first time I’ve seen a video from this channel. There are plenty of good tech channels out there, but most are EITHER in-depth and informative OR funny and entertaining. When I realized this video was both I subbed right away. Looking forward to more!

We have been hearing about revolutionary battery tech for decades, but never see the tech in the market place. That is the real story.

literally waited so long, but I get it, making such top notch content is time consuming.. Great work!! Hope y'all doing well.

About battery life - yes, this is a Tesla warranty but in practice, there are Teslas with way higher milage and still on original packs. I think that the average for Model 3 is over 90% of the original capacity after 250k km. And they are just getting better.

So glad I landed on your channel. Informative, entertaining and not even a teensy bit preachy. How refreshing!

This channel not having more than 2 million subscribers is a crime against humanity ! Awesome video.

If I had £10 for every “world changing” battery I would be able to afford an EV

You should do a presentation on “Iron Air” batteries. These batteries have greater renew ability, no dendrite problems and are great for stationary applications because of their weight; however their power densities are much better and safer. Basically think of the oxidation process of iron an electrolyte and membrane which creates a current. You can reverse the process to de-rust the iron by reversing the charge, there is basically no byproducts and can be recharged almost indefinitely.

I've learned to stop getting excited by the hype until a product is commercially available.

Anyone... Else feels like we are on some sort of maniacs "repeat" button? As if I heard this story over and over and over again for the past 3 years?
