MEGA-TSUNAMI caused by LANDSLIDE Hits Village!

Shocking video captures the impact when one of the tallest tsunamis recorded in history hits and devastates the village of Nuugaatsiaq (Greenland) in the late evening hours, causing four deaths. The tsunami wave, which was initially over 90 meters high (about 300 ft.), reached the small village Nuugaatsiaq with a wave height of about ten meters.

In the evening of June 17th, 2017 (at about 9:40 pm local time), a gigantic landslide (measuring 300 m × 1,100 m = 980 ft × 3,610 ft) occurred on the southern slope of the Umiammakku Nunaat peninsula. Several dozen million cubic meters of rock and slope sediments fell about 1 km (3,300 ft) into the Kangilleq fjord, which triggered a tsunami that moved westward into the Karrat fjord complex. The tsunami wave, which was initially over 90 meters high (about 300 ft.), reached the small village Nuugaatsiaq with a wave height of about ten meters (about 30 ft.). It took the wave only seven minutes to cover the 32 kilometers distance to Nuugaatsiaq, which means it reached an average speed of 275 km/h. Rescue helicopters brought the approximately 200 local residents to the district capital of Uummannaq.

In 2018, a Swiss company observed the situation and found that the mountain slipped about 1 cm every day and one could expect another landslide at any time. The risk for this was rated at 11.5 out of 12, which is why a resettlement at this time was further excluded. Shortly thereafter it was announced that there was still danger from the mountain slope, making it impossible to end the evacuation. The village of Nuugaatsiaq has since been abandoned.

How do you even begin to clean up and recover from a catastrophe like this. It’s just incredible how fast that water was rushing in and how fast the water level rose and the speed of it. Crazy! So terrifying. God bless all these people that survived and RIP to the lives lost human and animals.

Always build your house with the worst case scenario in mind. If the worst case scenario is a 10 metre high tsunami, build your house 20 or 30 metres above sea level. It may be a longer walk to the beach than everyone else, but at least you’ll have a home to walk back to.

If that wave is 10 meters high? Those houses would be a 100 feet tall.

At least it was 24hour sun in June.

It would add a whole other level of horror had it been during the dark times, without any real lighting, while adding ice shards and bergs to it.

Waterfront has its advantages and its disadvantages. I prefer higher ground.

What cute little houses. They remind me of ice shanties on the lakes during winter.

That's a tragedy. I hope the village was able to recover.
We have already passed, here in Italy, one of the worst flooding of all times when almost the entire flatlands of the region Emilia Romagna was flooded for more than a week.
Many cities and villages was devastated. Almost all of them lost everything they had.
Now situation is almost normal, but still people there have to buy back everything they have lost. Fridges, tv, furnishings, internet stuff, computers, cars, etc...
Floodings can be dangerous.

Could you imagine a 300 foot wave? The only way to record it would be standing on a tall cliff or mountain. That village is flat land, they all would have died for sure.

Particularly along the coastal regions! I thought they would be more prominent in the mountain ranges!!
