you CANNOT save the private key to your 'desktop' or the same drive you're encrypting. You CAN, print to a pdf but you should definitely move that key/pdf to a flash drive or a cloud drive- somewhere you can get at it if you need it.

Question, I upgraded from win 10 to 11 - I had important encrypted file in win 10, can not access them, I still have old win 10 and the users - is there a way to log in and open any encrypted file in win 10??

Saving the recovery key to a file on your computer sounds like it defeats the purpose of encrypting your drive. If someone got onto your computer, couldn't they now just use the recovery key on that file instead of needing your BitLocker password? Genuine noob question.
