In this Volume III of George Vancouver’s 6-part chronicle of his 1791-1795 ‘Vancouver Expedition’ to Canada’s Pacific Northwest, Captain Vancouver and his crew sail down the North American coast from Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island to the 16-year-old Spanish mission of San Francisco. Captain Vancouver develops a cordial relationship with his Spanish rival, Senor Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, at California’s Monterey Bay. Meanwhile, Vancouver’s Lieutenant William Broughton and his crew explore the Columbia River. The company return to the Hawaiian Islands for the winter, and there learn of the Hawaiian's capture of the American trading vessel the ‘Fair American.’ The crew spends the winter in Hawaii, visiting Maui and O’ahu.
