Voyage to the North Pacific Ocean and Round the World, by Captain George Vancouver (1801): Book the First.
In this Volume I of George Vancouver’s 6-part chronicle of his 1791-1795 ‘Vancouver Expedition’ to Canada’s Pacific Northwest, Captain Vancouver and his crew embark from Falmouth Harbour, Cornwall, England, in the ships ‘HMS Discovery’ and the ‘HMS Chatham’ on April 1, 1791. First, they sail down the west coast of Africa to the Cape of Good Hope, stopping along the way at the Canary Island of Tenerife. They continue east across the Indian Ocean to Australia, known at the time as “New Holland.” After visiting New Zealand and discovering the Antarctic ‘Snare Islands’, they proceed up the Pacific Ocean to Tahiti, discovering the island of Oparu, or ‘Rapa Ita’, along the way. The crew enjoys the hospitality of the Tahitians under Captain Vancouver’s watchful eye.
