I hear you there... I’d honesty really really love to (read:think it would legitimately help me and others ) if you could talk more about imposter syndrome in a professional context.

But! I love your content! I’m a new subscriber thanks to buzzfeed. From this imposter to another, you’re being awesome.

The only way I finished my PhD thesis was by repeating the manta "Done is better than perfect". I even made a poster so I'd have to see it every day

I've always battled with both GAD and perfectionism. Fear of failure was--and still is--something I have to be aware of and overcome daily. The first time I went to college, I had a bad habit of procrastinating because I felt I couldn't get the assignment "perfect". I failed many of my classes, had to repeat them, and eventually I dropped out. Then, a year ago, I made the decision to go back to school and work on a degree that is a fail safe:Creative Writing. I'm passionate about writing (often getting writer's block for the same fear of failure and need for perfection), and I had said that I will do everything in my power to get my degree. If I fail again, if I drop out again, at least I can use what I learned in school to improve my writing. I'm happy and proud to say that I've been getting A's in my classes and getting my assignments turned in on time.

Still, one of the best pieces of advice I received from the book "Retrain Your Anxious Brain, " is to accept failure. Accept that you can only do your best, and if you do fail, pick yourself up and try agian. That advice has been the most helpful piece of knowledge I received. And, your videos definitely help. So thank you for making them.

Have you experienced perfectionism, fear of failure, or all or none thinking? How have you dealt with it?

We wonder how common unhealthy perfectionism as a trait is amongst scholars. We're planning on talking about this kind of paralysis people feel on our study tips series, and we'd love to talk about this more with you! Thanks for addressing this topic Ali!

This is me exactly! I know I'm a perfectionist, but I'm not perfectionist at the *end* of a project - if I get there at all I usually think it's okay. I'm perfectionist at the *beginning*, so much so that if I have any doubt that it's going to be perfect (which is always) I have trouble getting started at all.

I can very specifically relate to the fear and anxiety of suddenly getting a lot more attention on your youtube channel, and honestly if I hadn't already been using a strict weekly production schedule at the time I think it probably would've broken me. The only way I got through it was by focusing on the process instead of the end result: I knew that if I took the same steps I usually do, I would make a video that was as good as my other ones, and that was good enough. Over time I've gotten more used to it, but it's hard to adapt to.

Hi Ali
I like the style of your videos. There are no confusing jump cuts nor annoying animations. You are just yourself and thus the content seems original and personal. It doesn't matter at all when there is a little slip of the tongue or a wrong camera setting. This even makes it more authentic!
Personally, I am also a perfectionist. But I think in science - where I work - this is very important. ;)
I'm very happy I can see more of your content now. I look forward to these two weeks!
Good luck with your "self therapy",

I've started to follow the mantra, "You can do anything, but not everything." It helps rein me in and focus my efforts :)

I don't know if I could stop being perfectionist in uni yet, but I've been working on it on daily life precisely as you will do it with your channel. Being exposed has helped me a lot with social anxiety even though at the beginning it sounded like a punishment. Hope I could thank enough for people who had helped me with it

Last year I had failed in one exam, which became extremely worrisome for me as I wanted to pursue my career in Psychology. The semester after that, even I had a lot of anxiety, and pressure (created by my own thoughts) to do extremely well. That's when I remembered my professor's saying, "If you enter an exam hall with the fear of failure, no matter what, you will definitely do bad on the test!"
I integrated her saying with Dr. Ali Mattu's suggestion of getting comfortable being uncomfortable. And that's exactly what I did. I entered the exam hall 40 minutes in advance and listening to music and looked at my surroundings. This strategy worked for me. And my results came out to be much better than last semester!

So great ... thanks for modeling for us ... the vicious cycle, how to expose ourselves to it, take risks and 'fail' publicly, and for being so amazingly open ... love it!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I delayed my Master's thesis for years because I couldn't quite decide on the perfect research problem, and the best method, and the most logical and comprehensive discussion. After my final defense I regretted not having finished my paper earlier. These days I am a lot more "chill" about my work in general.
