The BRUTAL Executions Of The Canterbury Martyrs - Mary I's Burnings
Показать описание
Mary I is known as 'Bloody Mary,' for her brutal executions of Protestants during the Tudor period. She burned at the stake over 280 Protestants who refused to conform with her religious beliefs. But inside of many towns and cities across England, condemned people were being brought to be burned at the stake in horrific scenes. Burnings were regarded as one of the most brutal and barbaric execution methods, and often it was a very slow death for people convicted of heresy. But inside of Canterbury, over a number of years there were a high number of executions.
Between 1555 and 1558, many people were executed in Canterbury and were accused of religious crimes such as refusing to acknowledge the Pope, or read the Bible in Latin. Many refused to attend church, and inside of Canterbury many people were executed at times on the same fire. The scenes inside the city were brutal and were harrowing and shocking, but they helped to reinforce Mary I's legacy as a feared and barbaric Queen.
