In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains possible warning signs and symptoms of bile duct cancer - which is known medically as 'cholangiocarcinoma'; plus causes, investigations and what happens when you go to see your doctor.

WHAT IS BILE DUCT CANCER?

Bile duct cancer, also called cholangiocarcinoma, is a cancer that's found anywhere in the bile ducts.

The bile ducts are small tubes that connect different organs, including the liver and gall bladder. They are part of the digestive system.

How serious bile duct cancer is depends on where it is in the bile ducts, how big it is, if it has spread and your general health.

WHAT CAUSES BILE DUCT CANCER?

Anyone can get bile duct cancer. It's not always clear what causes it. You might be more likely to get it if you:

- are over the age of 65
- have certain medical conditions, such as abnormal bile ducts, long term swelling in the bowel (ulcerative colitis) or bile ducts, a parasite in the liver (liver flukes), bile duct stones and liver cirrhosis

WHAT ARE POTENTIAL SYMPTOMS OF BILE DUCT CANCER?

Bile duct cancer may not have any symptoms, or they can be hard to spot.

Symptoms of bile duct cancer can include:

- the whites of your eyes turning yellow or your skin turning yellow, which may be less obvious on brown or black skin (jaundice)
- itchy skin
- darker pee and paler poo than usual
- loss of appetite or losing weight without trying to
- feeling generally unwell
- feeling tired or having no energy
- a high temperature, or you feel hot or shivery

Other symptoms can affect your tummy, such as:

- feeling or being sick
- pain in your tummy

SEE YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE ABOVE SYMPTOMS

IMPORTANT:

Many of these symptoms are very common and can be caused by different conditions. Having them does not definitely mean you have bile duct cancer. But it's important to get them checked by a DOCTOR. This is because if they're caused by cancer, finding it early may mean it's easier to treat.

Very informative video! Not a very common cancer, but bile duct cancer does have signs and symptoms like other cancers, that could raise a red flag that there is an issue. Beautiful presentation and very nicely explained! Super helpful! Thank you Dr O’Donovan!❤👍

My father sadly passed away with this horrendous cancer, his signs only showed up a week before diagnosis, but it was to late as the cancer had crossed the portal vein in his liver and he was gone very quickly . There should be more done for this cancer as it’s very common in the far east and Middle East x

Yes, I’ve complained to my doc for a year. My liver enzymes kept increasing. I had a, Whipple procedure, ugh it’s a rough surgery. I was in ICU for 1st (4) days & needed (2) pints of blood 🩸 & pain medication change. My cancer was at were bile duct & small intestines meet. Margins were clear & (21) lymph nodes removed were all clear so no, treatment, just surgery. I had part of stomach, most small intestines, gallbladder, entire diseased bile duct removed, head of pancreas & lymph nodes all removed. I had treatment started within one week of blood work & ERCP at, Foxchase Cancer center, Philadelpia, PA. Amazing surgical team.

Im scared
They say the bile duct and areas around are dilated. I have a strange lump under my rib cage as well, not a hernia it doesnt show on a ct scan the bump, but it's painful. I've been itching for months on my hands and feet worse in the mornings. I've had night sweats off and on for months, and Im down a good amount of weight. I did intentionally lose 10 lbs now. Im down close to 30. I have nausea and vomiting, but not every day.
Im waiting on my referral to be accepted. I've tried all week to get in touch with someone. I'm not saying it's cancer but definitely frightening. I also have my stimach gurgle after consuming anything, even water. Thank you for your video.

Nice description. My had CC for 18 months. She was under Chemo continuously without skipping single. Along with chemos in day care, she was on SOne Caps which she too 04 daily for 10 months allmost. She died of bone marrow and toxin in body. Why Dr. went on experimenting with chemos and took innocent life ? When such hospitals stop inhuman acts?
