Knockoffs vs. HORL Rolling Knife Sharpener

Can the cheap copycats do as good a job sharpening your knives as the original? Do rolling knife sharpeners actually work? How do rolling knife sharpeners work?

UPDATE: Since posting this video, HORL released a new version of the Cruise with both 20 and 15 degree angles. It's also cheaper than the Tumbler at the moment of this comment, so check that out if you're interested in a solid mid-range option. In my opinion, this is the best value out there, because it performs just like the HORL 2, but without the ability to upgrade the discs to whetstones, which isn't totally necessary for basic home use.

I've been a fan HORL's rolling knife sharpener ever since I worked with them last year. I was impressed by how easy it was to effectively sharpen my kitchen knives, but I've always wondered if the knockoffs, copycats and dupes can do just as good a job for less money.

So I decided to stop wondering and find out for myself. And I made this video to help save you all time, money, and the trouble of figuring it out for yourself.

SPOILER ALERT:
Out of good conscious, the only sharpeners that I can recommend are the HORL brand. If you liked this video and would like to support more product reviews like this, please consider using these links to buy your rolling knife sharpener and let me know in the comments what brands and fakes you'd like me to review next.

Horl 2 -
-This was the sharpener that I used in the video. I've had it for over a year, and it still works great. It's an investment for sure, and I wouldn't go into debt for it, but if you want a solution for sharpening your own knives whenever you'd like.... in 2 minutes... without any practice or prep.... THIS is the product I recommend.

HORL Cruise -
-This is the mid-range option. I have not used this, but if it is made of the same materials as the HORL 2, then I believe it would be a great mid-range option for anyone who doesn't need a 15 degree sharpener and doesn't want to change discs for finer grit whetstones. No frills, just sharp knives.

Premium Sharpness Kit -
-If you really want to get your knives razor sharp. This is the extra sharpening kit that will take you there. I use this about once or twice a year to just top off my knives and get them SUPER sharp. The Japanese knife in the video was sharpened with these a couple months before filming.

Thank you for this video. Tumbler blasted the internet with ads. I thought they were the “original”. I’m glad I didn’t waste my money.

One note on the sharpeners lasting longer than whetstones, thats true for the traditional whetstones however there are also diamond based whetstones which do not have the issues as traditional whetstones. You do however still need to learn to sharpen with them.

I‘ve been using the Horl 2 for about 4 years and it stills works as well as it did on day one. Absolutely no regrets with my purchase

I’ve seen tumbler brand ads for years and only a few days ago did I see one for horl. Glad I hesitated and read all the reviews. Now I just need to save for one.

got my knockoff from aliexpress...£18 with an extra 3000 stone and shipping in 5 days. its superb. no fading of 'diamond' wheels its just simple and easy to hold correct angle without too much thought or effort. quick slap at the strop after and every knife is just on point. no complaints

I've been wanting (and looking) for this exact video for months, looking into getting a HORL after seeing all those TUMBLER ads everywhere. The Internet Never Lies, right? Thank you!

Finally, an honest review. I have used wet stone for nearly 6 years, but was still interested in this concept of rolling sharpener.
While researching, however, I have discovered that numerous youtubers and bloggers promoted the knock-off version more than the original one(I am not going to mention some specific names, but some of them have over 2 million subscribers).
Also, the tests that they so have "conducted" were mostly hiding the downside of those products on purpose.
I know that they did it on purpose, because they were using the loopholes of measuring instruments that I know so well about.
I am glad that there is finally a honset review about these products. God bless you.

I'm not a serious knife enthusiast, but I do have a couple Japanese knives, and while I often feel a bit ashamed that I've never been able to sharpen with whetstones, I'm very grateful the Horl sharpener exists. I used the standard diamond and honing discs on my German knife, and all four discs (diamond, honing, and the premium set) on my Japanese knives. I really love the results.

I was thinking on buying a whetstone, but the algorithm brought me here, and I'm so grateful for that. Not only I know now about the Horl sharpener, but I have a whole new channel to binge.
Keep it up!

I would love to see more videos like your last 3 long format videos. Comparing knifes, pans, knife rollers or methods it’s informative and entertaining, you clearly know your stuff!

This is the video I've needed for so long. I've been skeptical of these rolling sharpeners ever since I saw them, and held off buying one because of that. Good to know that the skepticism was warrented, but I'm even more glad that one of them actually works. I'll definitely be getting a Horl sharpener. Thank you so much for this video!

I love lansky. Learned it for my outdoor knives, chisels and hones, then applied it to my kitchenware.

Your the best youtuber I've seen since shorts were released, and your voice and the way you explain things patiently, and calmly just gives you that Bob Ross kind of feeling. The way your content is organized with the partitions and boundaries for each and everything is just amazing. So just wanted to say thank you for the absolutely amazing content

I got the Tumblr a year ago and was incredibly upset when it stopped rolling smoothly after 6 month. Terrible quality. Glad I ran across your video and found out it wasn’t just me. Looking forward to trying a Horl

Good thing I saw this. I was thinking of getting the Tumbler to sharpen knifes. Now I know those ads were a scam. In the ad there was no issues of gears malfunctioning cause drag and now that I know. They probably scaming using editing to make it look like it rolling easier then what you just showed.
