One’s a mean ass fish and the other’s a weapon of war.

Spear was so OP that even when we got guns we tried to keep the spear by strapping a knife to the barrel 😂

The spear was the most broken op shit throughout all of history. Easy to use, easy to make, can use with a shield and can keep enemies or animals too far away to hurt you.
Nerf pls

It's a spear when a soldier can use it effectively without the support of an entire formation. It is a pike when it's worthless on its own.

From what I’ve studied (and this mostly comes from the Classical & Hellenistic eras of Greece) a spear (Dory) is between 8 & 9 feet long while a pike (Sarissa) is between 18 & 20 feet long. 9 feet is generally considered the longest a spear can be wielded one handed, even by the strongest of soldiers at the time. And if you’re going to be forced into using both hands for a weapon, it’s best to make it as long as practically possible.

There are shorter spears as well as some of intermediate length from this era as well, but they were generally used by light infantry (the short spears) Or cavalry as proto-lances (the intermediate length spears).

Spear wielders looking at pike weilders: “it’s not about the size but how you use it :(“

It's just like how you determine a gun from a Canon, if Rambo can fire it off the hip it's a gun, if Rambo requires a bipod it's a Canon, for vehicle mounted or helicopter mounted if Rambo can fire with a butterfly trigger it's a gun but if fired by a solenoid it's a Canon.

"Using it with one hand clasifies it as a spear"
Medieval age savages: *double wielding 3 meter long "spears"*

I find that really interesting because there’s a middle ground where it can be both. In the same way that a knife is a throwing knife if you throw it, a spear can be a pike if you need to use 2 hands

So basially it depended from the person not the weapon.Interesting classification

I'm not a weapon historian, but from many examples I've seen, pikes also generally have different tips than spears; while spears often have elongated, sharpened edges, allowing them to both thrust and do some slashing, pikes generally have more dulled edges (though length varies depending on the design), since they were only able to be used for thrusting.

"is this a spear or a pike?"
" *Yes* "

It gets even simpler when you look at several periods in time where their is no difference, lance, shortened lance, pike, spear, short pike, and boarding pike have all been used to describe what we would call a spear (let's say 6'-9' for arbitrary dimensions ) at different points in history. Basically thinking there a rules for classifying weapons is a modern thing and the reality is its actually a game of "who's line" where the rules are made up and the names don't matter

So what you're telling me is it's not the size that matters, but how you use it

I'll keep that in mind...

I always thought it was based on whether it could be thrown or not. Every day's a school day with Stakuyi! Love your channel, all the best to you and your amazing family.

A pike is a "mine's bigger" pointy stick. Insert all the jokes here.

So what you’re saying is, if you’re holding it with 1 hand, it’s a spear, but if you’re holding it with 2 hands, is a pike
