I also did similar to this. I baught 6 apartment house in the suburbs instead of fancy house in the city. In just one year rent I earned covered my mortgage and could close mortgage in 4 years. Now It is nice alternative source of income that covers more than half of my monthly expenses.

The market where I live in is so expensive. For an average three bedroom two bath house with no yard no pool or anything is about 800, 000 to 1.3million. I was thinking of starting my real estate investing journey in a cheaper area.
