Does Driving With No Brakes Make You Faster?

This week Ethan and Jack take our cheap E36 test car to the Curborough track to see if driving with no brakes can actually make you a better, smoother, faster driver. We were going to disconnect the brakes, but because of health and safety, we instead decided to fit an incredibly loud alarm that will blast your ears if you touch the brakes. The loser has to do a full lap of the track on a children's bike, because why not.

We do exercises like this on motorbikes at the tracks. Going fast without brakes makes you a smoother rider. It is scary the first time though! 👍

Bought a sweet Audi 4000S Quattro that way; went out for the test drive in a driving rain in Atlanta on I-85. No brakes at all. Happily, it had a good 5 speed and a pull center emergency brake.

$500US off immediately. Got it for $1200. Put a new master cylinder on for under $200 and drove the wheels off of it.

Years ago I done some stock car racing & the guy who taught us done this, giving us forfeits for using the brakes (usually having to wash everyone's cars) to teach us to drive faster & smoother round the track, instead of just stamping on the accelerator on the straights & breaking in to the bends, to keep our average speeds up over the laps.

I’m going to be amazed at 21 seconds of improvement from Ethan and totally ignore how that was possible! The fact that they ended up within 0.09 of second off of each other is quite remarkable. Would’ve been good to see a benchmark by a racing driver of some sort to see where the limits of the car within that challenge were.
