For anyone wondering why the driver did not attempt to put the car into neutral or other solutions prior to the emergency brake, there’s a longer video as well as a news article posted about this incident. Her vehicle had a manufacturing defect that caused a system error within the cruise control. The driver was not able to shift the transmission at all and the gas pedal was essentially stuck. The manufacturer of her vehicle was found at fault following this harrowing ordeal, and the driver received a settlement.

Everyone be saying "Put it in neutral, turn it off" etc. Y'all don't know how someone is going to react in a frantic and chaotic situation like that, your brain is flying at speeds never experienced before. Not even you could know exactly how you'd react in that situation. Think before you comment, she did the best she could given the situation and with the aid of the officers and dispatch.

Amazing job guys ! Bravo to everyone. She was very lucky in all of this. This is very scary, same thing happened to my mom and I many years ago. At first the car didn't want to go forward no matter how much my mother would push the gas pedal but then when it finally started to accelerate, everything seemed fine until we saw some work on the road ahead. Of course my mom had to slow down so she pressed the nothing !!! Nothing was happening ! Fortunately, she realised that she needed to put the car on neutral but still. When you're stuck in these kind of situations sometimes you lock down. Your nervous system doesn't seem to want to work with your brain anymore. The men working on the road were nice too telling her what to do next. The unnerving moment was something I never want to live again.

This is one of the reasons I have a hidden "kill switch" on ALL my vehicles. The kill switch cuts off power to the fuel injection system. Instantly kills / disables the engine. Two reasons: one, it would save me if something like this happens; two, it makes my car theft proof. If you're not mechanically inclined, take it to a mechanic you trust and they can install it for you.

Brake failure and throttle stuck and ignition cant be turned off? What are the odds?

I've had this happen to be too in a 2013 Toyota Camry. Turned on the cruise control at 25, and the car instantly floored it to 35 within a second. Hitting the brakes disabled the cruise control, still scary to think what I would've done if it couldn't be disabled.

Watching this made me wonder "Why didn't one of the police SUVs drive in front of her and gradually lowered the speed, to kinda force the malfunctioned car into slowing down?" It should've worked in theory, right?
