GCSE results are out and the pass rate has fallen for the third year in a row, taking it back to around pre-pandemic levels.

In England, grades are ranked from 1 to 9 - with 9 the equivalent to an A*, which is still the top grade for students in Wales and Northern Ireland.

The proportion of GCSEs with a standard pass of grade 4 in England, was 67.4% - down 0.4% on the year before.

In Wales, the number of grades that were C or above fell to 61.7% from 64.5%.

While Northern Ireland saw the biggest percentage drop, with grades down by 4.6% - though it still recorded the best GCSE performance of all the nations.

There was also a big north-south regional divide in England.

The fact that these kids are happy about only passing and not getting at least a decent grade like a 7/8/9.. is just sad to see. My brother got his back today and got 5s and a 7. I got similar grades 8 years ago, my mother and father were disappointed both times and that made me self reflect & do way better in the future. I was ashamed when I got my grades. DO NOT BE PROUD OF A PASS. Do BETTER

Weird, thumbnail photo is of brown and black boys with the title about falling grades. Then the news piece switches to pretty white girls and boys celebrating. What's the subtext here C4 and why?

When parents don't understand education, they didn't do well in school, it perpetuates the cycle of having no or low expectations or care about their kids education. Of course this is a generalisation, but it is a significant factor I think. And then there is the socioeconomic and the cultural situation, so poverty and the idea that study isn't 'cool', and kids who don't see any future for themselves, who don't understand the point of education, and see higher education as a privilege of the wealthy, not 'meant for them' etc. Since the guy didn't want to, or didn't know the answer to the question.

Now kids are being forced to spend more time in school again standard's have dropped back down. Nothing to be learnt from that is there. Like maybe a four day working week would benefit people

They need to drop, pass rates keep going up and kids keep getting dumber, it makes the exam results redundant if it keeps happening
