A video codec is piece of software that allows your camera to capture high quality images at a very fast rate.

Codec stands for encoding and decoding.

There are 3 main types of codecs: acquisition, intermediary and final. You most likely have used at least one of these if you’ve ever recorded a video.

Codec do compress video files so there is a loss of information depending on the codec you use. The only way to avoid losing information in you file is to shoot with a RAW codec. This however will also mean you will record larger file sizes. The plus side to this is that you have more flexibility when colour grading your footage in post production.
