I'm went all in learning about video and image codecs these past few days, and I can tell you they're late to the party when it comes to AV1 "decoding". I've had this in my consumer graphics card for 3 years now!
What's really missing is AV1 ENCODING, which is still reserved to the last generation of consumer graphics cards, or Google's latest mobile SoC (Tensor G3).

The most important aspect of AV1 over VP9 is that there's GPU-acceleration on recent chips, whereas for VP9 there's literally nothing encoding-wise (only software encoding for the vast majority of chips, of hardware decoding for some) so it's very slow compared to HEVC or even AV1 hardware (GPU) accelerated encoding.

AV1 is a marginal improvement over VP9, but what's nice about it (over parallelization) is that it's also applicable to images with the AVIF format, which is honestly a banger over WebP but still requires AV1 decoding/encoding for usability.
When most hardware will support it as widely as they support good VP9 decoding, it'll be an amazing improvement.
Honestly I'm baffled at the efficiency (compression quality) of this codec for low-resolution, so much detail preserved it's insane. It's also royalty-free and very versatile.

Wasn't av1 available on Intel arc GPUs, Nvidia rtx 4000 and probably amd Rx 7000 GPUs and phones for at least a year now?

They are not accelerating anything. Apple is just finally adopting tech from years ago. They bragged about ray tracing on m3 but that has been out in consumer gpus and some dedicated gpu windows laptops since 2018.

I consider h264 more popular than h265 because you don’t have to pay for it

With svtav1 the software encoding speed is actually nearly the same as h264 if you aim for the same quality scoring such as VMAF not the same preset of course because crf 20 on h264 and av1 is vastly different and in that case yes it would basically take exponentially more time

It's not just open source in the way that the *GPL is """open""" source, the main implementation of it is BSD-2 licensed.

Also, what's the point of even mentioning 5G? It's an impractical gimmick that under ideal conditions delivers speeds that you are never gonna need on a phone. 4G speeds are more than sufficient.

Even Google and Microsoft contributed more than Apple.
