If a webpage uses an API in the background and Javascript to render the content on the client-side, but the API is not publicly documented nor mentioned as available for use, is it (1) ethical and (2) legal to retrieve data via this hidden API (found only by examining the network traffic say using Developer Tools within the web browser) even in the absence of any specific "thou shall not retrieve, copy, manipulate, store, or use the content of this website for any purpose (with or without written permission)?" statement on the website? Perhaps the answer depends on the country.
