Number 9 on the list is Idaho where building a house will save you $70,000 over buying an existing home. The average home value in this state known for its natural beauty is $430,000 which gives you an overall savings of 16% just by building from scratch. And fun fact about Idaho: in 1950, a group of beavers was parachuted into the wilderness by the Idaho Fish and Game Department as part of a beaver relocation project.

Next up at Number 8 is Florida. Here, building a new home will pocket you a difference of $76,000 over buying. So with an average home value in Florida of $378,000, you’ll save 20% just by building. Plus, with over 1,300 miles of coastline and no state income tax, you can enjoy the beautiful beaches and keep more money in your wallet. Just remember that in Florida it is illegal to tie an alligator to a fire hydrant.

At number 7, constructing a house in Montana will save you $84,000 compared to buying a house that’s already built. Montana is home to stunning natural landscapes, including Glacier and Yellowstone National Park and has an average home value of $431,000. So building new will save you 19% and you won’t have to deal with an old roof or broken water heater. But make sure not to give anyone in the city of Billings Montana a rodent as a gift because you may be arrested.

Let’s move on to state number 6… Maryland, where building a house will save you $95,000 over buying. Maryland offers rich history, delicious seafood, and a vibrant cultural scene. And with an average home value of $382,000 you’ll be saving 25% of your money by building new. Which will leave you with more cash to go and compete in Maryland official state sport… of jousting.

Anyways, building a house in the state of Virginia will save you $96,000 over buying an existing home. And with the average home value of $352,000, building your own home in Virginia will save you 27% over buying. And Virginia is home to 3 of the only houses in the world to be built out of coal, so, you could build the 4th!

Let’s get back to the list with Delaware, which actually ties Virginia with a savings of $96,000 over buying. But since Delaware has a slightly lower average home value of $349,000, you end up saving just a little bit more percentage wise at 28%. Delaware’s biggest attraction is definitely it’s annual pumpkin chunkin contest where participants compete to see who can launch a pumpkin the farthest using homemade devices.

Next up is Utah. Now even though it's illegal in Salt Lake City to walk down the street carrying a violin in a paper bag, building in Utah will net you $97,000 over buying. And with an average home value of $500,000 you’ll save 19% by building a brand new house.

At number 2 on the list, constructing a house in Colorado will save you $108,000 compared to buying a house that’s already built. And Colorado isn’t just home to the rocky mountains, it’s also the go to place for downhill coffin racing… and it has an average home value of $529,000. So building new will save you 20%.

And finally one of the states where you can save the most money by building new, is California. And I’m not just saying that because I live here and I’m building a house here. People who build in California instead buying an existing house save an average of $205,000 which amounts to 29% of the average home value in California of $717,000. This level of savings is almost exactly what I recently achieved by building my house in California. And if you want to learn more about how I did it, check out some of these videos. Just make sure that if you pile your horse manure on a corner in san francisco, that it’s less than 6 feet high so that you don’t face fines.

You built your home in California? Was that before or after crime rates sky rocketed?

The problem with California is there's no land cheap enough to justify building a home on it
