Bart Ehrman Shocks Everyone When He Admits THIS about Christmas

Bart Ehrman used to be a devout follower of Jesus Christ, dedicating much of his life to studying the New Testament. He later abandoned Christianity and became an agnostic after concluding that the amount of human and animal suffering in the world makes no sense if the world is governed by an omnipotent, loving God. Nevertheless, Ehrman sometimes makes candid admissions about what he thinks about Christianity. For instance, in a Facebook post, Ehrman wrote:

“The God of Christmas is not a God of wrath, judgment, sin, punishment, or vengeance. He is a God of love, who wants the best for people and gives of himself to bring peace, joy, and redemption. That’s a great image of a divine being. This is not a God who is waiting for you to die so he can send you into eternal torment. It is a God who is concerned for you and your world, who wants to solve your problems, heal your wounds, remove your pain, bring you joy, peace, happiness, healing, and wholeness. Can’t we keep that image with us all the time? Can’t we affirm that view of ultimate reality 52 weeks of the year instead of just a few?

I myself do not believe in God. But if I did, that would be the God I would defend, promote, and proclaim. Enough of war! Enough of starvation! Enough of epidemics! Enough of pain! Enough of misery! Enough of abject loneliness! Enough of violence, hatred, narcissism, self-aggrandizement, and suffering of every kind! Give me the God of Christmas, the God of love, the God of an innocent child in a manger, who comes to bring salvation and wholeness to the world, the way it was always meant to be.”

David Wood (Acts 17 Apologetics) discusses Ehrman’s comments about Jesus and the God of Christmas. Being aware of people’s attitudes towards relevant issues can impact our evangelism.

Well done David! I’m currently reading Misquoting Jesus and the response to it (Misquoting truth) by Timothy Paul Jones. So I’ve been learning a lot about Ehrman.

I don’t understand why Erhman loves talking about God but doesn’t want to believe in him.

I think a great way of understanding the classic paradox of many loving Jesus and hating God is that humans can judge character among other humans, but quite simply are incapable of judging God.

That sounds like a stupid way of saying: "Do not doubt, " but it is fundamentally true. Humans are not gods and do not know what a god is supposed to do. What is a god supposed to be most like? Should he be more active or inactive? How should this god relate to humans as compared to the rest of the world? Humans can't agree and aren't sure. However, humans are human and have a pretty good idea of what humans are supposed to do. And so, when God becomes a man and lives as a human, we can judge for ourselves and recognize He is a good man. However, we are perpetually going to be unable to judge His divine actions. This is my theory on why people love Jesus as a man, then get spooked by the actions He takes in the Book of Revelation after returning from humility to His proper place.

If god is real and even somehow if a 1st century carpenter was his incarnation born to cleanse our sins, then this god of love would not judge me based on whether i acknowledged him but he will judge me based on how i treat his other children. Its as u say, how can humans be greater than god in love. most parents i know love their children unconditionally, parents do not seek the approval of their children, they do not seek the acknowledgement of their children, they just provide for their children as much as they can. So if god exists, this god that created this vast universe for his children will not be a petty attention seeker and does not need to be affirmed. He would not subject me to eternal torment just because i rejected him… Rather he would judge me based on how i treated his other children, as in, my fellow human beings.
