In this short from Misquoting Jesus with Bart Ehrman, he delves into a fascinating theme of the book of Revelation. In this text, there is a mention of scorpions capable of inflicting excruciating torment upon people for an extended period - five whole months, to be precise. This reveals a perplexing concept of justice. Tune in to Misquoting Jesus with Bart Ehrman as we critically examine some intriguing theological quandaries.

Inflicting continuous torture is more about satisfying man’s desire for vengeance than God delivering justice.

According to Christian mythology, their god is all-loving god.
So much for his love.

Permanent suffering and unspeakable agony in a lake of fire never made any sense to me (except, of course as a scare tactic)… what’s the point?

It's obviously a simplistic ploy to threaten people into obeying the priests.
An omnipotent, omnibenevolent God would turn bad people into good ones or zap them out of existence because in heaven the relatives and friends of that "bad" person would be saddened if their loved one was being tortured.

Another clear example of how secular morality is superior to biblical morality.

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch wrote "any man who desires to be whipped, should be whipped." To love this book and it's proscription for ones life is to prove Masoch correct.

I will really love it if you can do a video about the actual teaching of Jesus.

I don't believe in any of this but is it really justice if people who tortured don't get back equal to what they dished out?

Another pointer that this is the work of man, not gods. Fire was a constant threat to people back then. When we came up with fire departments and equipment we cut down greatly on the threat. Excessive punishment isn't godlike. Just have two heavens, one with Elvis, one without. The second would be enough, especially for eternity.

Justice doesn't require torment but it does involve a specific duration for offense committed. But cessation of being is no punishment at all. To be returned to the state that you were before ones birth is not a deterent of any sort nor is it justice for hw crimes commited

Revelation is coded language for which we don’t have the key. Fun to speculate on what it might mean but I find it to be something that can easily be left out.

You would think that after God burns a person in Hell for a million, billion, trillion, gazillion years, God would think, "OK, I think I've made my point. Now you can stop suffering." No, no, no, no, that's not the all loving, merciful, just, God of the Christians. Jesus is a perfect God and the perfect punishment is one that never ends. Honestly, what is the point of that?

its self imposed, Pope Saint John Paul II says “God is the infinitely good and merciful Father. But man, called to respond to him freely, can unfortunately choose to reject his love and forgiveness once and for all, thus separating himself for ever from joyful communion with him. It is precisely this tragic situation that Christian doctrine explains when it speaks of eternal damnation or hell. It is not a punishment imposed externally by God but a development of premises already set by people in this life. The very dimension of unhappiness which this obscure condition brings can in a certain way be sensed in the light of some of the terrible experiences we have suffered which, as is commonly said, make life “hell”.”(General Audience Address 1999, 1)

In my faith the eternal blessings that God has for all but Sons of Perdition are far greater than they deserve. So God allows them to suffer for 5 months, a speck of eternity, so possibly they will repent. And if they repent the blessings they receive are exponentially greater than what the wicked are given.
