In this beautiful Austin home on the Colorado river I go over modern base trim, pencil lined cabinetry trim, and trim on doors and casing.

Huge thanks to our sponsors Marvin Windows, DAP, Cosella-Dörken, and Sugatsune for helping to make these videos possible!

As a trim carpenter. I’ve done this exact design plenty of times. Usually high end apartments in to 30th floor or above.
It makes sense doing it where owners don’t spare any funds and want things done right.
If you’re trying to do this yourself, don’t even think about getting anything less then lvl5 drywall install. And even then. Everything else must be on par. Especially framing. (Because Sheetrock guys typically don’t care, they’ll cover anything, and just flare with spackle.
Personally I prefer modern trim but on top of drywall. If the house moves eventually, and it will, this trim will still look better

I 've been watching Matt's work...really nice . Also, I really like that Matt isn't afraid to try new things . This is great work, and doesn't come together by accident .

Love these details. It's a lot of work but worth it if you appreciate the contemporary style.
From one builder to another....Thanks for your dedication Matt.

it would be nice to see more close up shots of the details you are talking about.

Wow, glad i found your channel. If i could afford your services, i would hire you. But being a poor first time home owner with champagne taste but a beer budget, your videos are a very useful resource! Thank you

Would've been great to actually see what you were talking about instead of fancy and I guess cinematic camera movements

Can you please show us still closeups of the trim! Watching you talk isn't helpful.

Love this detail. We did this in our Gleneagles project and with the minimalistic style of the home, it worked perfectly.

I love where your designs are going. As a young carpenter and woodworker, I loved crafting the ornate details on a Victorian home....now that I'm much older, I really appreciate the clean design and light modern design affords, plus it's much more practical to. Lean and maintain. The essence is that craftsmanship is in the details, and you're obviously on you way to mastering every architectural style.

The flush trim on base I saw being done in 1998 in upscale houses in Venice, California. It’s not new and from another video you did there was flat blocking on the bottom plate between studs as a nailer. I would think you would need a good GC and crew: (Framer, drywaller, trim carpenter) to make it happen otherwise you’ll have a big wavey mess on your hand trying to flush up drywall and wood. Then you would probably want to mill the baseboard using 3 1/2” plus baseboard 5/8 or greater... and a 10’ greater top plate, just my thought? The casing is also an issue where you need the door jamb plumb and level, so you don’t have things tweaked and shaving this and that. I’ve seen recessed reveals done now around the jamb and the finish drywall. The groove is painted black to hide out of square wall(s). Thanks for sharing. Most people don’t have an eye for these finish details. So unless the house was $2M plus or you appreciate fine (woodwork) details I think it’s a dubious expenditure. I noticed on the trim there is a small rabbet 🐇 was that detail carried through to the casing?

Hey Matt, I agree. When you see it in place, in that house, it looks good. I don't think it would be for everyone. Some folks will prefer the shadows created by intricate mouldings. Or the look of tray ceilings. That is quite the house you have there.

I read down here a lot of hate for such a precise and dedicated work. Great job on those sleek, out-of-the-box finishing details.

Man I swear I'm going to do this one day. Always wondered how flush baseboards were done, when done in a way that's maintainable. A labor of love, but worth the effort I'm sure.

you got flush trims, then you got non flush light switches;)

Ironic, minimalist design requires maximum effort by the craftsmen to make it happen.

I love these kind of modern details, partly because you can be sure no one on the crew is going to be getting away with sloppy workmanship— it would become painfully obvious. You can weed out the people that just don’t care, and hire the people who are passionate about quality work .... and know what they are doing.

A lot of trendy homeowners get hung up on contemporary "superiority details" that they've seen in art museums. I remind them that the shadow line provides an excellent hang out place for spiders. That normally takes care of that obsession.

I used to love the esthetic of modern builds, now I roll my eyes at it every time I see it. 🙄
