This is very good! Well done! I have watched so many yt videos and none of the so called experts explain this basic way to start. They don't explain the root size, to chop it down to keep it small, to plant it at the bottom of the pot to keep it small and to trim it to control it. They are all full of themselves of poopoo-kaka ! Well done wikiHow!

WORST advice. You want the roots as healthy and vigorous as possible. Try to get the best bonsai soil possible! That's absolutely crucial. Order at a specialized bonsai shop. Only cut back once a year, beginning of growing season. Maybe a second light cut in summer, but avoid if possible - that's more for already developed bonsais. Let the plant grow as strong as possible and then cut back hard in early spring to train it into the desired form. During the growing season water and fertilize daily. Natural outdoor sunlight, also for so called "indoor" bonsai. Check with your tree species about winter (indoor, outdoor, how much water...). Repot the tree ever one or two years and work on the roots. They should be radial and evenly ramified. With bonsai you work buttom up: first develop a good root base, then a good trunk and then the canopy.

That are the absolute basics. You'll figure the rest out on the way.
