Marty Robbins was the greatest storyteller country artist. This song is a masterpiece. The sequels “Falena” and “El Paso City” are also brilliant.

Dad says this is the first of three interconnected songs. Next is "Feleena" followed by "El Paso City", Give them all a listen, you won't be disappointed.

I've heard this song for as long as I can remember. One of the reasons I love it is that no matter how many times I hear it I always get lost in the song and have a mini movie playing in my head.

I’m a retired county sheriff. Several years ago, at a convention for the Western Sheriff’s Association, I met the current owner of Rose’s Cantina in El Paso. It’s on my bucket list to visit there one day. I also sing and play this song while doing entertainment at retirement homes; it’s an audience favorite. CHECK OUT “BIG IRON”, another great story song by Marty.

Marty Robbins was a singer, songwriter, actor, multi-instrumentalist & NASCAR racing driver. Robbins was one of the most popular & successful country & western singers for nearly five decades 40's-80's. He had so many hits such as "Singing The Blues", "Devil Woman", "A White Sport Coat", "The Story of My Life", "Don't Worry", "Big Iron", "Knee Deep In The Blues", "Honkytonk Man", "Don't Worry 'Bout Me", "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife" etc.

Apparently, this is one of Bernie Taupin's most favorite songs. While he was touring the Songwriter's Hall of Fame to accept the George Gershwin Lifetime Achievement Award, Taupin was in awe. He said he could hardly believe that his song lyrics would be posted alongside songs like Marty Robbins' "El Paso" which he loved so much as a kid.

Yes, three part trilogy. El Paso was so good that years later, Marty wrote a song (the story about Felina) and finally the reincarnation song of the Cowboy flying over El Paso and somehow remembering what happened a 100 years earlier. Fiy, Marty's song, "Big Iron" is another great cowboy song about an Arizona Ranger

I was seven years old when Gun Fighter Ballads came out. As soon as it did, my parents bought it. My father had just built us a stereo (cabinet, turntable, speakers, he built the entire thing). Gunfighter Ballads was the first new album they bought to play on the new stereo. My entire family loves every song on this album.

On February 28, 1973, my father and stepmother treated me to a ticket to Marty Robbin’s last concert in Salt Lake City, Utah. Every song he sang was amazing, but the audience couldn’t wait for the songs from Gunfighter Ballads came. When the opening chords of El Paso finally started, the entire crowd went wild. It was awesome to hear him sing that song, in person.

That was a night that I will never forget. ❤️💔❤️

So glad you have finally got around to my childhood hero! Please react to "Big Iron" (one of his best!), "Streets of Laredo", "Mr Shorty", and more.... Marty Robbins is arguably the BEST musical storyteller of all time.

I took the Greatest Hits of Marty Robbins when I went off to college in 1967. I've heard this song a hundred times!

Love that Marty used Spanish/Mexican guitar base line to do this song - that's an important part of "cowboy culture" - the Mexican influence. I SO agree that this is REAL story telling, no refrain/chorus. I've loved this song since I first heard it - in any genre, it's one of the best with both great lyrics, artfully told, and great instrumentation, artfully played. So glad that you've finally heard it!

In the early 80s, when I was in college, my family took a trip to Alabama to visit relatives. My cousin won tickets to see George Jones and invited me to join her. The venue was small in a rural area. It probably sat about a 1000 people and was like a large barn with no walls. It was a lovely summer night, away from the city lights where you could see all the stars and the temperature was perfect. As we waited for the show to begin I started to wonder if George was going to live up to his name “No Show Jones“. He did. After about a half hour someone came out to tell us that George wasn’t going to make it. But, the concert wasn’t canceled as they had someone else to take his place… Marty Robbins! I was looking forward to seeing George, but, wow, this was terrific! Everyone seemed just as pleased. His voice was wonderful and still in great form, and he was so warm and friendly to the crowd. Thank you, George for not showing up that evening. I unexpectedly experienced one of my favorite concerts of all time. Just 5 months later, Marty Robbins departed the planet in December 1982. How lucky was I.

Love Marty Robbins! He was an incredible storyteller. He did a lot of cowboy music. Big Iron, The Master's Call, Saddle Tramp, and many more. One of my favorites though is a song he wrote for his wife called My Woman, My Wife. It's beautiful.

This is the first part of a song cycle. “El Paso”, “Felina”, and “El Paso City”. There’s a huge difference between western music and country music. Not just in subject matter, but structure and performance as well. Marty Robbins would have been a fantastic singing cowboy.

I’m 77 and this was one of my fav songs growing up in east Texas. I would go around singing it all the time. Even as a child, I was fascinated by song lyric rhyming sequences. My fav from this song was “I picked a good one, it looked like it could run.” So sleek!

Marty Robbins wrote "(Lord) You Gave Me a Mountain" which Elvis performed so wonderfully during his "Aloha from Hawaii" concert, which you should absolutely react to. This was my mother's favorite album. It was called "Marty Robbins Sings El Paso and Other Gunfighter Ballads". El Paso reached #1 on the Billboard Singles Chart in January of 1960. The other Gem from this album is called "Big Iron" which a number of reactors have reacted to. It's fire also.
