As a fellow educator may I please offer a suggestion for greater clarity to your example of real life usage of negative numbers in the tree height ground zero scenario?When you dig the hole below ground zero the resulting DEPTH is -20 not the resulting Height is -20.
I know distinguishing height as above ground and depth as below ground assists students to conceptualize the negative number without the confusion of having to think height below ground? Height is a concept that is traditionally thought of as above ground. While it's true you can have below ground heights, I know especially with differently able learners, that providing contextual clues such as depth to denote negative below ground values in the language helps the student to grasp the math concept without having to decipher the language.
