How do we use its vs it's in English grammar? What is the difference between these two commonly confused words? This is one of the most common errors in English (especially for native English speakers). Once you understand the difference between its and it's, you will no longer make this simple mistake again! At the end of this grammar lesson, there will be a 10 question quiz where you need to fill in the blanks with "its" or "it's". I will provide the answers after each question.
"Its" is a possessive pronoun that is used to show ownership or possession by a thing or animal. It does not have an apostrophe.
Examples:
The dog licked its paw.
The cat played with its toy.
(The paw belongs to the dog. = The dog's paw (its paw)
The toy belongs to the cat. = The cat's toy (its toy)
"It's" is a contraction of "it is" or "it has" and it always has an apostrophe.
Examples:
It's going to be a beautiful day. = It is going to be a beautiful day.
It's been a difficult year. = It has been a difficult year.
