11:00- This system of 'bounty for stiffs' spurred a couple of mass murderers in Edinburgh named Burke and Hare who, in 1828 had run a boarding house with their girlfriends and, after a boarder who'd been in debt died of natural causes under their roof, they took that late boarder to a medical school where the professor gave them a huge bounty. This spurred them to start taking in only sick and dying folks to wait for them to die so they could have a steady large income but then they got impatient and greedy and started murdering folks to get the monies. Their final downfall came when they murdered a prostitute who the professor's medical students not only thought looked far too healthy to have died of natural causes but some of the students themselves had slept with her in recent times so they KNEW she had been healthy and they went to the authorities who soon charge Burke and Hare with the murder followed by the two of them fessing their crimes. Burke wound up hanged before a huge crowd while Hare was pardoned but then got sent into hiding by the police.
