Can you relate? - lesson 33

ADHD Life Lessons I Wish Someone Told Me After Getting Diagnosed, Number 33/50

If you have ADHD you will always want things right now. That dream job. That relationship. 100k Followers. You name it, no matter how difficult it may be to get, you want it now, because it can feel almost painful to have to wait. You then work in overdrive for a few days **or a week,** only to realize that it’s a lot more difficult to attain than you thought and so you move on to the next thing, leaving your old goals in the dust and feeling guilty for not making your dreams a reality.

**This is when I had to learn about adhd, our relationship with time and how to achieve my goals despite of it.** **I learned that we often underestimate how long something will take because our brains are literally blind to the feeling of time and that we are therefore only motivated in the short-term,** **which is why it’s impossible to achieve anything meaningful without setting small goals that motivate you, daily.** **Giving my brain daily targets has allowed me to finally enjoy the journey, all the while giving me perspective and confidence.**

Oh I feel this so much and think "gifted kid syndrome" has just amplified it.

I want to be able to learn something quickly and then if I can learn/do it immediately, I'm bored. If I can't do it immediately, I'll move on.

Then you've got longer term stuff like career progression and home ownership and the idea of that being possibly years away just eats away at me

For me, I don't just set daily goals. But I got a white board. Each weekend I'll put down things I need done over the weekend that I adjust throughout the week. By the weekend if I don't get some or any of them done I don't shame myself over. That's never worked. Instead I just accept I didn't get them done and both them to next weekend's goals. Eventually, they get done.

I thank you from the bottom of my soul for you; these videos help not only millions of people worldwide who feel something is “wrong” with them (myself included) but you are helping to break the stigma around mental health

One of the greatest skills I ever learned in my 5 years running my own direct marketing business was how to make goals, break them down and set smaller monthly goals, weekly goals and daily tasks. Invaluable stuff I’ve learned to use in multiple areas of my life.

Very true! This is a daily battle of mine. I think we do this because we foresee all the steps on how to do that project and believe it is simple. The rushing brain doesn't see the obsticles.

I also have a tendency to forget things
That I learned from these videos. Does anyone else do this? It will be so important to me and so meaningful and spot on etcetera and I'm sure I'll remember therefore possibly forgiving myself for things when I'm so hard on myself

Nice Duro!

And this is totally me. A goal never gets achieved unless I break it into smaller ones, and do one today.

Do you know how painful it is having to wait till the end to hear the ADHD Life Lesson? Seriously. I wish you'd begin, saying : "Do XYZ !". Then I'd be like "Why?!". And driven with curioisity to learn *why*, I'd still watch till the end but in total relief.
