Fun fact back when Malta was owned by Britain they had a referendum to decide if they wanted not only to remain as an overseas territory but to become an integral part of the UK (like England, Wales, Scotland, N.Ireland) they voted in favour of it but the UK government disregarded it anyway and gave them full independence. It baffles me but it's part of a collection of nations that didn't want independence but got given it anyway.

The Maltese Cross symbol came from The Knights of St John of Jerusalem.
I spent 6 weeks and didn’t see everything. Everyone speaks English, great weather, old megalithic buildings, crystal clear water, great food, grotto’s, WW2 history and George Cross recipients symbolised in their flag. There are small streams that have an ecosystem including freshwater crab and yabbies! Pastizzi is pronounced ‘past-it-see’. Mmmm rabbit stew!

I suggest you look up in terms of history the following. The Great Siege of 1566 When an Ottoman Turkish Army and fleet of c. 40, 000 besieged the two main settlements of Malta, Briga and Sengala in a very brutal siege that eventually failed. The second Great Siege was during the Second World war when the island was more or less besieged for over two years by the Germans and Italians. (1940-1943) In the siege Malta became the most bombed place of the Second World War. During the war, early 1942, the British awarded the entire island the St. George Cross.
