Hi, from Spain
Just clarifying that the "sobremesa" thing it's not about taking a long time to eat. It's about staying at the table talking for hours after you finished eating

Whistle language was created because Gomera island is very mountainous and scarcely populated. The sheppards there needed a way to comunicate with each other on long distances and whistles can be heard and recognized much further away than normal words

Actually, the king's name is Felipe, as you said, but Anna said it in English. Just like she said Ferdinand of Aragon, but in Spanish it's Fernando de Aragon.

Hi Heidi, i'm from the uk, and was lucky enough to spend the best days of my life travelling all over Spain as a roadie for a band, Spain really is an amazing country, in the north you could believe you were in Switzerland, the forests and the houses just away from the coast are just like i imagine the Swiss lower regions, Madrid is a great city to visit, the countryside of the interior is sooo flat, it really is amazing to not be able to see any kind of rise in the land before your eyes have reached their limit, after the Sierra Nevada mountains, you will encounter desert, and dry arid hills, in the south small towns like El Puerto de Santa Maria on the coast, or Sevilla, the hottest area in Spain where the oranges are world renowned are a delight. my favourite experience was every small town or village has their own fiesta, to celebrate mostly their saint, the streets are decorated, kids are dressed up, they are all different and unique festivals, really worth looking out for, an can i just say, siesta's are a brilliant idea, until you as a visitor are stuck and need something when everywhere is shut, not in big towns or city's too much, but the reason for the comment is that if anyone really wants to experience Spain they should :- #1 go to the small towns and villages, #2 be aware that most of Spain really does shut down for Siesta. but above all go ! the diversity of everything there is unique. great content Heidi. bon chance.

For centuries, Italy was part of the Crown of Aragón during the late Medieval times and up to the Barroque era. The Italian lords were subjects to the Spanish king. During the last years of the 15th Century, and first years of the 16th, both France and Aragón struggled to own the Italian Peninsula. King Ferdinand of Aragon (Married to Isabel I de España (then Castilla, León, Galicia)), borrowed the Castilian general Don Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba to lead the Aragonese troops in Italy (Italy was not a country until 19th Century). Meanwhile, Isabel I was sending Colón to what now we know it was America)...

In Germany we sometime say as a joke, that Mallorca is the 17th state of Germany (actually we have 16) because so many Germans go to Mallorca for a vacation. And that since the 1970s already. But many Brits go there too. And then we have the revival of the battle of Britain, over who claims the the most deck chairs on the pool side... :)

Mallorca, ibiza, las Canarias, are spain. Germans and brits are simply our guests, and they would remain as such as long as we like it.

Spain had NO colonies. Spain considered their other territories as Spain itself, so the divisions where Virreynatos, were a ViceKing acted in the name of the King. Someone living in Las Vegas in the 18th Century, was Spanish, as someone from the Peninsula.

“Are there Taco’s in Spain?”
Never change Americans 😆

...but for real, what I love about platforms like YouTube is that you get to share and learn about many different cultures, backgrounds and experiences, something which so many people didn’t have access to until very recently.

Spain is a curious country, in the north, in Navarre, you have the second largest virgin forest in Europe, after the Black Forest in Germany, while in the south, there are places where forests are almost science fiction. In many ways, it would be a perfect country, were it not for our tendency to have bad politicians (each government is usually of more inept people than the last). Even so, I think it is a country where you would enjoy being and seeing, you have hundreds of things to see in each city.

Germans really call the island Mallorca "das 17. Bundesland" (the 17. federal state) - no joke. Okay it is a joke about how many Germans do their vacation on this beautiful Island - often party the whole time and do behave there, like they never would at home

Yeah, you were right. Our different climates are stronly defined by the mountain ranges which block the humid air from the sea. That's why the north has terrain and vegetation similar to those in Ireland (in fact there's a legend that Ireland was populated by spanish celts), and that's why the center of the country has some harsh continental climate because the moisture from the mild mediterranean sea, doesn't reach that zone. Also the center is a big elevated plateau. It's not uncommon to have lots of highways at 1500 metres (5000 feet) thoughout the country.

Just in case this helps helps somebody confused with the whole "spaniards have a lisp thing":

The standard accent of spain has two diferent sounds: A regular "s" and a "th" sound. We pronunce every S as the english "s" from "same" and Z as the english "th" from "Think". Then there's the C, which we pronunce "K", except for CE and CI which use the "th" sound too.

Some examples:

Sangria = /s/angria
Barniz = Barni/th/ as in "with"
Cerebro= /Th/erebro as in "Think"
Cinco= /Th/in/k/o

In latin america they use an accent more similar to that of southern spain where they don't make a diference between s and z, and use the s sound for everything (We call it seseo).

I've heard some regions of latin america use ceceo too, which is pronouncing both S and Z as "th". This is common in some places of southern spain too.

Running of the bulls or encierro happens in my town, Pamplona, but it doesn't belong to Basque Country, it's another autonomy, Navarre. We are very close to basques and share culture and language (basque), but is another region, very diverse from North to South.

The whistling language exists because La Gomera is a very mountainous island full of forests. For centuries, the shepherds lived isolated in the mountains for months, and they communicated with each other taking advantage of the echo with a whistling language. Nowadays, evidently, It is no longer used, but it is taught to maintain the tradition.
