Why You Should DELETE Your Starting Highway (Cities Skylines Beginners Guide)

Показать описание
When you start a new city in Cities Skylines, you're almost always given a starting highway to build your city around, this encourages players to create their starting layout around the highway, which can lead to the city being cut in half by the starting highway, this makes creating a well-connected walkable city difficult. Today we will be deleting our starting highway and replacing it with a boulevard with bike lanes, which will open up a bunch of new land for residential and commercial development and create new opportunities for improving traffic flow by bringing in connectivity and re-routing outside traffic to a bypass around the city.

In this easy-to-follow beginners guide, I'll show you the BEST way to start a brand new city 100% vanilla. If you're an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER, we will go over the basics of the game, from the starting road layout to zoning, services and how to make money in Cities Skylines. We will go over the next few milestones and what to do when you unlock each one.

This tutorial applies to both PC and console players, but I am playing on a PC so some things may be different if you're on PS4, Xbox, Switch, etc. I have a few visual mods installed to make the game look more visually appealing, but the gameplay itself is 100% vanilla base game.

There's so many things I could say about the building itself but.. the fact that you gave the same amount of care and attention to every minute of this 50 minute long video without ever lifting the foot off the gas speaks volumes about the dedication and effort you put in. Mad respect my friend.

First discovered you through TikTok, and I'm constantly seeing your lane man videos; but it's so nice seeing you develop a whole city and putting so much care into it. As disappointed as lane man might be in you, I think everyone else should be enthused by your dedication and attention to detail.

This sure as hell looked like fun to redevelop entire chunks of the city. I often feel like it would be great to play around with someone's creation and improve connectivity, remove ugly roads and unrealistic bendy trainlines, plus add a ton of landscaping and detailing. Wish there was an easy way of doing it and a platform to share cities for others to fix.

I've actually thought that, for CS2, it would be nice to have maps which don't have highways on to start with, just the single carriageway national roads. That way it's more realistic, as those national roads serve as high streets through the town, as it grows around it, and then highways can come later when the population warrants them, and be built around the geography of the town, rather than the town being built around a highway. This wouldn't be possible in CS1 as you can't add new outside connections, but in CS2 you can, so when highways are needed you can add them in and create their new connections to the outside

It’s nice that people is starting to understand that lanes doesn’t entirely solve traffic congestions.

The Cities Skylines II hype got me on a youtube binge and I'm so glad I found your videos. I'm so afraid of deleting stuff and never deleted my highway, and after this video I can't believe I never did it. Expecting the II to have less wonkiness and be more forgiving when we upgrade/downgrade roads 😀

that robert moses meme at the beginning is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time

you could drasticly improve connectibility in some places by connecting cul-de-sacs to main roads with paths, and making crossings in some long stretches of roads as well

Fascinating to see you integrate a major highway development project into an existing city, and funnily enough I think your labours with the vanilla original game only serve to highlight just how amazing CS2 is going to be, with all the improvements we've seen in the developers diaries. I didn't properly understand the fuss over things like the roundabout tool until I watched your struggle to build a very simple one in vanilla CS1...

Transformative! Great way to show how much better your planning brain is compared to a vanilla highway!

Amazing what you did with that expressway through the city! I would have made broader curves on the new bypass, but hey that's just me. Whatever works! 🙂

Love doing/watching these kinds of projects upgrading and rerouting roads & rail, especially how you left relics of the old alignment. 😊 (P.S I genuinely assumed the 25 tiles that became available in the console remastered version also came to the PC version. Tells you how ubiquitous my use of 81 tiles is. 😆)

As a beginner, I was worried about deleting houses and some structures. Now knowing that I have such liberty, I need to make a lot of changes on my city's structure.. Excited lol
