By saying do you think you can manage this, aren't we giving the other person authority to decide?

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:

00:11 📚 Delegation is often not taught in formal education, making it a challenge for emerging leaders.
01:21 ⚠️ Two main issues with delegation: Emerging leaders don't know how to delegate, and even when they try, they often do it ineffectively.
02:02 😓 Ineffective delegation can lead to overwork and overwhelm for the leader.
02:30 🗨️ Assertive communication is crucial for effective delegation.
03:28 📝 Provides a structured example: "Monique, I need you to finish the XYZ report by tomorrow morning. Do you think you can manage that?"
03:56 📢 Starting the delegation with the person's name can make the message more impactful.
05:09 ❌ Avoid delegating passively by asking questions like "Would it be possible for you to...".
06:17 🤝 Ending the delegation request with a question like "Do you think you can manage that?" can soften the message while keeping it assertive.
07:43 🔄 Offers additional examples for diverse situations to illustrate the delegation technique.
08:11 🎧 Mentions a podcast episode for those interested in diving deeper into the topic of assertive delegation.

I wish I knew this when I was a team lead at a student society.

Great advice. Going to try this technique as I am a new manager. Would love to hear your feedback / advice when there is pushback, how to counter and encourage completion of the delegated task. For example, what if the person responds with “maybe I can. “ or “not sure but I’ll try.” Instead of the “yes” we hope to hear.

4:52 - 5:51 the moment you realize that you treat management like a full on democracy, perhaps to excess smh

I love your videos, very detailed yet easy to follow. I have a question. As an emerging leader in a relatively new role, how would you suggest delegating when you consistently find errors? You can't possibly do everything on your own but how can you trust others when you find such an overwhelming number of errors across the board when stepping into your role?

Does anyone else find this “I need you to” very rude?
