Since a=b a-b equals zero. Therefore you cannot divide by a-b because you are then dividing by zero.

You can't divide both sidesby a variables because the variable may have a value of 0 then it will be undefined

Not sure if its what Belovedbee meant, but if one of them can be proven to be 0 before you divide b on both sides, then you cannot divide both sides by 0 aka b

a^2-b^2= 0 (a=b) therefore
0=ab-b^2
b^2=ab
b=a
a=a
1=1
