Hey bookworms! What new books have you picked up during quarantine?

George R. R. Martin: “This book inspired me to write my 7 books ...”
Mike makes a pause, turns his eyes to the camera without moving his head and: “Seven books George?”
This made laugh🤣

You might consider Margaret Weis too. Stumbled across her books in the 80's and early 90's and while I haven't read all of her fantasy books I have enjoyed the several I did read and keep meaning to go back and read the rest of her various series and she's still turning out new books in her 70's.

having read both ASOAIF and MS&T (though I'm stuck on the last book), I can say that those are two VERY different sagas. it's possible, of course, to see where George may have taken a thing or two (or more) as inspiration for his work, but the differences are far greater than the similarities. the way they're written, the pacing, the tone, the mithologies, and many other aspects are pretty distinct from one another.

The Dragonbone Chair is actually one of my quarantine purchases as well. Started it a week or so ago and have been LOVING it. I know it's not high up on your list but I dare you to read the first couple chapters and see if it doesn't hook you.

I laughed so hard at the apple falling down the hill remark with regard to Brian Herbert :D :D

6:54 as a German Native tongue I recognized the german cover of "The Stand" and got a little bit too excited. I've Finished "If It Bleeds", really good imo, especially "Mr. Harrigan's Phone". Such a great little story!

You are going to love the Great Tales of Middle earth! I got a great price on it as well. I had already read The Children of Hurin before but that is a nice set and I don’t mind the size at all. If It Bleeds is really good. I am not a big fan of Holly Gibney but she’s been around so long now she feels like your favorite pair of shoes. Enjoy your haul!

I got a kindle paperwhite as a belated birthday present, and checked out a few titles from the library, Malice and Valour among them. I have holds on The Blade Itself and The Last Kingdom.

It's probably much easier to find Tolkien's books in hardcover because they've never went out of print like Malazan and others have.

If want a recommendation for female authors, Naomi Novik has the Temeraire series. Napoleonic wars with dragons. I remember liking them.

April was my month of online shopping for sure! Lol Shipping took a while but it filled my need for retail therapy. My favorite purchase was the hardbacks of the Mistborn series that I have been wanting. I usually do most of my reading in bed when the kids are asleep but I used a reading light and prefer a hardback in bed because the light clips on really well lol

As someone who was read a lot stuff from female authors, trust me when I say this: bad romance is something that transcends genders.

Kushiel's Darts by Jacqueline Gray is pretty good, though. Also, Dorohedoro by Q. Hayashida.

I have been giving Amazon my money for kindle. So freaking convenient but nothing to show for it in the end. I don't currently have a place with enough room for a bookshelf and my current collection is in a storage locker so kindle makes sense.

The Silmarillion was one of the hardest books I have ever tackled. I am not sure I took away anything from it to be honest. I found it like a textbook. In the future I will reread it hopefully with better results lol. When some online reviews talked about GRRM's new Fire and Blood being similar to a history book I have steered clear so far because of flashbacks to the Silmarillion.

Modern female sci-fi author recommendation that everyone should check out: Becky Chambers. Her imagination and characters are absolutely wonderful! Start with her first novel called 'The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet' :D

Still working on WOT so I ordered book 3 for that. Also based on your recommendations I also ordered Malice, Gardens of the Mooon, and The Dragonbone Chair. So much reading and so little time!! 😊😊😊

Love Expanse, look forward to hearing if his other stuff is any good.
You could probably read Earthsea to your son after you are done with Potter, it's kinda got that old school YA vibe to it.
