More frames =/= better. It hurts me when people upload those 60fps animations thinking they are improving it. About your walk cycle, the 12fps is my favorite.

Idk why but 12 fps feels just perfect, the sweet spot

This’ll definitely help with my animation studies! Love the Elder Scrolls Oblivion music, by the way.

I think frames per second has been sort of (overhyped?) in animation. I see fps too commonly be associated with “good” animation. Which is why I wince whenever I see someone ask “what fps do you animate in?” because it really isn’t that important. What makes animations look good are all the keys and principles and other stuffs.

You don't need to stick to 1 framerate. You can vary it even within a single shot. A dynamic framerate, I find, is the best way to get the best mileage out your drawings while still making it smooth. For example, you might animate a fast punch on 1s but the windup and overshoot for the punch could be on 2s.

60 Frames = Video Games
24 Frames = Movies
12 Frames = Actions And Dancing Scenes
8 Frames = Movements
6 Frames = Talking

I 8fps. As someone who’s learning animation, it’s just easier and I like the aesthetic more than 24fps. I also just don’t like when the animation is above 30fps, i think it looks too flowy and “good”. Just my opinion tho lol

2’s or 3’s, because I prefer the snappiness. It makes each motion seem decisive and clear, something to note, particularly with subtle changes, as there’s a bit more of a “look at this” conveyed vs smoother animation.
With smoother animation, things can seem rather unsettled, movements can look a bit too smoothed, almost jittery, like oil sliding over water, and subtleties are less clear.

Also, of course, making use of stretch-compress and blur frames with fewer tots frames saves a lot of time, and lends a conciseness about the motions.

A sort of “snap” instead of a “slosh”, to onomatopoeia the matter.

ive been enjoying working with 8 FPS and lower recently, it looks way more pleasing to the eyes for me. not to discredit the huge amount of work that goes into higher framerates, but most people i see using incredibly smooth animation with their style idk it doesnt look great

It honestly just depends on what I’m doing

That’s what I love about stuff like this. Technically there’s no “correct” way to do it. Just do whatever you want

One of my pet peeves is when video editors think that 60fps is better because of the "smooth" animation. They don't realize it can actually ruin the animation.

Whenever I animate, I tend to use ones and twos, because that’s how animation has always been for the older hand drawn animation, though I know for a fact Disney isn’t above using threes, because I’ve seen them use threes in a specific part of Beauty & the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas.

24 FPS - Disney movie
12 FPS - most western animation
8 FPS - Anime
6 FPS - Animatics/Pilots

it also helps to swap between them when needed and you can also have several things moving at different frame rates at once if you wanted.

I started at 24 fps because every other animator does

But I started to animate in lower fps (around 12) not just because I loved the choppy feel, I just watched the spiderverse😂

honestly, for me, it is better to use less frames in actions or combat scenes (and use smears as well!) it gives that great impact in these scenes

8 is my favorite. It’s also the animation rate I usually animate at.
