Hey Chaps! Which MBP would you go for??

Update 1: Full test lineup is:
👉 MBP 13 M1 8c/8c 16GB
👉 MBP 14 M1 Pro 8c/14c 16GB
👉 MBP 16 M1 Pro 10c/16c 16GB
👉 MBP 16 M1 Max 16c/32c 64GB

Update 2: Heat is mostly exhausted underneath/back, so proximity to side of others won’t have significant impact 👍

The fact that he bought 3 Macbooks just to correct his mistake. Now thats dedication.

Finally! A proper battery test! I'm glad I went with the 16" M1 pro

I respect the fact that you went out of your way to correct your mistake

No wonder mine hasn't been delivered yet seeing how you've bought them all lol

Wow… this was really REALLY useful! Rather surprised how that M1 Max performed over LOAD! Very interesting. Will reference this video in my review. Awesome job 👍

The fact that you corrected yourself and then produced a dedicated video admitting your mistake makes you so much more credible! Well done

Keep in mind the Max is doing far more work in the first and third tests. It’s rendering far more. An apples to apples test would be rendering a single project to completion, not rendering for 60min regardless, and decreasing preview quality in Premiere Pro until all laptops drop an equal number (zero) of frames — or doing an actual export.

Essentially if you have tests that don’t actually force a faster computer to do more overall work, you won’t see nearly as large a battery difference.

”Been editing in FCP, RX9, and Photoshop, browsing, messaging (incl Electron!), downloading and installing, for 10 hours on the 16-inch M1 Max MPB, not a single beachball, freeze, fan, or furnace. All on battery. Still 40% left. So silent. So cool.” - Rene.

Going to return my en-route 16 Max and try to find a mid-spec'd 16 Pro after watching this video. Battery life is important. Thank you for this test!

I was quite disappointed with my M1 Max laptop battery and after this video, I replaced it with M1 Pro 16" laptop. Massive difference in the battery life. Thank you for making this video.

The under load comparisons are pretty much pointless unless you are going to quantify the work done by each laptop during the same test. M1 Max did the most work and used the most battery but it might have been the most efficient machine there. You don't know unless you control that variable.

The light use is a bit more interesting. The GPU cores should go almost unused in the applications you ran there yet the Max chip seems to have a significant impact on battery draw. I would like to know if it was application specific. Could you simply measure the power draw of each machine during desktop idle with brightness normalized? Maybe some software will let you see the power draw of the GPU package separately?

I mean, it's physics. M1Max has a 400GB/s memory BW and has 2x the GPU cores. Even in idle, it's gonna draw more power.

Laws of the jungle.

But if you are getting the M1Max you probably know what you want and you desperately need the power, so lose a bit of battery life isn't a significant concern to you.

I wonder how much the low-performance mode could help increase the battery life?

Thanks a lot for these test ! But why do you not test the Battery Life on M1 Max with activated Battery Safe Mode?

With something like blender, it's not hours of runtime that matters necessarily. It would be also useful to know how many frames get finished in that time. Frames rendered per battery charge might be a good metric.

This is probably the most accurate video on real-life scenarios. It accurately paints that this 'All Day' battery may actually be 4-8Hrs (14inch) depending on your workload, which is a reflection that people don't spend 17hrs watching a video at 50% brightness. Superb information - Thanks!

This review is great - compared to other major Tech-YouTubers who simply avoided the topic of everyday battery life of the news MBPs compared to the M1 MBP! Thank you very much! 👍😊

Would love to see one more dynamic to this. 16in m1 Max in low power mode. Essentially can you turn the M1 Max into an M1 Pro as far as battery life in situations where battery is more crucial than time to render

I would love to see results with low performance mode enabled on the Max. Also, I am reading on Reddit that some people have seen improvements in battery life when 500 Nits Profile was chosen.
