It seems everyone's pronouncing it incorrectly. I looked it up. It's pronounced: /ˌvīs ˈprezədənt/

What you showed here is Kamala's own "preferred pronunciation" of her name, which is not the same as "the correct pronunciation" of it.
Why? Because this is an Indian name, which means "lotus" in Sanskrit. The only correct pronunciation can be the original one, which is transcribed phonetically as "Kɑ'mɑlɑ" (the closest, for us English speakers, is Kah-mah-lah).
Her name is Indian, but she is American, born in California, and that's why her "preferred pronunciation" is actually Americanized; it is, transcribed phonetically, "Kɑməlɑ". The difference between this and the original pronunciation is in the second vowel (which she Americanized).
That's why all this discussion about "the correct pronunciation" of her name is totally ridiculous: because her own preference departs from the original pronunciation.

Excuse me but SHE is mispronouncing her own name on purpose. As Indians, we have seen this time and time again. There are Indian American kids who literally do not know how to pronounce their name the way their parents intended it.

The Tamil pronunciation and Hindi pronunciation is almost the same. The Tamil pronunciation is CUM-uh-LA (கமலா) with the "uh" being said very fast with no emphasis and the Hindi pronunciation is closer to CUM-LA (कमला). You can even go on google translate and copy and paste the text I have written and hear the correct pronunciation.

Kamala Harris' own "correct" pronunciation is wrong and is not what her mother would have called her.

Is it CAMala or COMala? This video leaves me with more questions than answers.

Many people are commenting "What's the big deal? Why should she care if people pronounce her name wrong? Why should I care?" Speaking as a person whose name has been pronounced (and spelled) wrong for more than 60 years, I can tell you why. IT GETS OLD, FOLKS! Everyone - whether a politician or a rock star or a plain old grandma like me - appreciates the care and attention and respect afforded to them when people take the trouble to say their names correctly.

My name "Jacqui" (JAK-ee) is often mispronounced when people see it written, as the QU confuses them. I have heard JASSIE, JASKEE, JASKWEE, JAKWEE, and - on one memorable occasion when meeting a German penpal for the first time - TACK-wee!

At least “Kamala” is fairly easy to spell. Because the name “Jackie” is more common, people automatically spell my namethat way - or they omit the C or the Q, or tack an E on the end. I usually don't bother correcting them unless it's important (legal documents, sign-ups, etc.) When spelling it for someone, I have learned to recite each letter slowly with a pause before the next one - and a dramatic pause after the C before adding that pesky Q.

The funniest spelling fail was the time a little neighbour girl drew me a picture and signed it "TO MRS. JACKQUIE"! She wasn’t taking any chances! For some reason people have less trouble spelling and saying my full name "Jacqueline" (JACK-el-in) - and for that reason I have started using it again.

I was named after my grandfather “Jack”, and I wish my parents had honoured him (and made my life easier) by spelling my name Jackie. You can bet that my husband and I put a great deal of thought into the names of our six children, choosing names that are familiar, easy to spell, and difficult to shorten.

Most Americans don't want to take the time to learn how to pronounce unifamiliar names. That's why so many immigrants have changed their names to English sounding names and that's not easy on feelings. With Indian first names in general, the accent usually falls on the first syllable, I believe.

Kamala is the female version of the Indian name Kamal. The stress is on the second syllable. Ka-mal, Ka-ma-la. The general English language rule is that the stress goes to the first syllable, but this rule must be abandoned for the names. Imagine this rule applied to the Spanish names Rodrigues, or Almeida.

I appreciate this video. I have seen her name pronounced so many different ways and I know most people don't mean to.

I am shocked by some of the nasty comments here. Harris is not mocking or belittling anyone by using children to demonstrate the correct pronunciation of her name. In fact, it was the decision of CBS Philly to use this excerpt from a 2016 campaign video from her senate bid. The cute kids were used because one of her objectives was to provide affordable childcare and increased funding for schools.

In the preface of her 2019 memoir “The Truths We Hold", the California senator described the pronunciation as "comma-la" and added: "It means ‘lotus flower, ’ which is a symbol of significance in Indian culture. A lotus grows underwater, its flower rising above the surface while its roots are planted firmly in the river bottom."

This lovely name reflects her heritage. Her father, Donald Harris, is Jamaican and her late mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, was Indian.
