How to pronounce João correctly

This is an answer to a video that claims to teach how to pronounce João. But they just did it wrongly.
As a Portuguese João, I couldn't let this stay the way it is and made a correction to the video. Hope all Joões in the world feel better now :)

My problem is this doesn't help me at all as I don't know how to reproduce these sounds.

To answer all you that ask why is this one better, it is because the "ão" is much better pronounced here. We could say that this is how it should sound the whole time, but depending on the local accent the "ão" sound can vary quite a lot. So the final answer is, both are correct, but this one is how it should sound all the time. So use this one for learning purposes...

Some years ago we stayed at a Hotel in Funchal, Madeira called São João. Nice to be able to hear, there was no YouTube in those days

It kinda sounds like the French name Jacques.

I have a portuguese friend that is also named João, we give this pronunciation +1

it's pronounced like Joo ("J" said softly like "genre") + oun ("n" is very soft, pronounced from your tongue hitting the back of your mouth, like in "looking")
The first syllable is easy, it rhymes with "too" but starts with the soft j sound from "genre".
If it helps anyone, the "ão" in João rhymes with many Portuguese words like:
the word for no, "não",
the word for construction, "construção",
the word for floor, "chão",
and the word for confusion, "confusão".

Is it just me or does every one of the 3 pronunciations sound different? 😵

To my american ear it sounds similar to the other version (which shows up first in google results), but with the accent on the first syllable instead of the second syllable.

How is this any different from the other one? It sounds identical to me.

Gotta watch a video of someone _with_ the name to know how to say it. Those other "How to Pronounce" channels muck it up.

You say there is an "u" sound as opposed to an "o"? zhuaw in my American...as opposed to zhoaw

Both are correct. The difference is that you pronounce with Portuguese accent.

Great.. I was wondering if João is a male or a female name usually...

No disrespect but I've listened to both five times and I hear no difference, except the little that could be explained by different mics and voices.

(And man, Portuguese spelling is weird. The letters don't match up at all with the sound. Granted, English has some odd spelling, but I chalked that up to what a mutt mix of many old languages it is.)
